Album of the Year Thread - 2022 - Winner - For the Sake of Bethel Woods - Midlake

This album is worth a mention. Doesn’t have to be voted on or owt but just good to get it out there. Only came out last week (recorded in November and December of this year).

The Holydrug Couple - Pan

Almost back to their Moonlust best with this one. Shame it didn’t come out in the Summer, this is a proper laidback Summery album.

Ives Sepúlveda has never had a good voice, but it seems like he’s actually tried on this album.

Just a quick note to say that I'll leave this running until the 30th December if anybody else wants to cast a vote.

Another album I’ve found over Christmas:

Penza Penza - Neanderthal Rock

Thanks to everybody who voted (all 5 of us!), and thanks to everybody who contributed to this thread throughout the year.

We've voted For the Sake of Bethel Woods by Midlake as our album of the year.

Both this album, and Misadventures of Doomscroller by Dawes scored points from all five of us, so they are a fitting winner and runner-up.

As I've noted to a few of you, the engagement in this thread throughout the year was not what I'd hoped for, so it doesn't feel like something I'll run again, at least in the same format.

Maybe we can have a thread where we discuss albums that are released during the year and we can have a simpler nomination and voting process in December. I'm open to ideas and happy to run it again in a simpler format if there's enough interest. Feel free to shout out ideas on this thread and to post your personal top 10 lists for the year.

Well done for seeing it through, some good albums have been put forward that wouldn't have otherwise been noticed by many. Including the late additions.

Maybe a change to the format might help, but think there will always be a bit of a niche group here.

I have a couple thoughts on what changes might make it easier, but it needs thought through a bit more to be fair.

OK. Just put any ideas on here and we'll see what everybody makes of them.

I think you are correct about it being a niche group. I will always love the albums I bought between the mid 80s and mid 90s more than most others. However, I like to listen to new music and generally find a few albums every year that are well worth listening to.

I only started following this thread a few months ago because I would like to discover some new music/artists. I must confess that I am a bit stuck in my ways being firmly rooted in the 70s predominantly! The only new music I tend to listen to is new releases by artists of that era eg Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt to name but two.

The way I access music now means I tend to listen to individual tracks rather than albums. I have hundreds of tracks in a "Miscellaneous" playlist on Spotify!

I would hope to contribute in some way in 2023 - had I done so in 2022 I would have nominated this album.

That's not a bad album - it was one of many I listened to this year. As I like a lot of Americana (I assume you do too judging by the above comment), I tend to read reviews on the No Depression and American Songwriter websites, and I think it must have been reviewed on one of those.

I discovered it via Folk Alley, it's a US radio station that I listen to from time to time and get an email newsletter which had a review of this album. I took a punt by listening to it and loved it...their first album is good too!

And yes, Americana is probably my favourite music genre.
