The percentage of young good players that develop into CL-class players is very small. By signing stand-out youngsters we have a chance to find one that can make it. Many factors are involved not the least being luck. If it doesn't work out then little harm is done, the lad will benefit from a world-class environment, will gain from being in a much bigger shop-window, and in effect the club has bought a lottery ticket. Soriano and cheeky's networking should ensure that this will have been researched comprehensively for quite a while, time will tell.

This lad is good, very good. Will be interesting to see how he develops in Mcr. Given a lot of time and patience with Villareial. Seems cheap but i guess there will be a clause for Villareial there.

There used to be a theory that if your good enough then your old enough. Still applies in many ways. Have a look at the game from last night.

It seems as though we have an age barrier in our heads for the kids to break through. I don't know what that is because non have broken through yet, but I think they are looking along the lines of 18/19/20 etc is to young and doesn't fit the brand.

Denayer was ready for 3rd/4th choice CB and he's now out on loan. Pelligrini kept saying 'he's a very young player'

Now I know Sterling throws that out a bit. It's just a theory, if it ain't that then I think the club must be looking at the ones we thought were ready and basically seeing something else.

Sterling doesn't throw the theory out. Pellegrini is like Mourinho. He'll buy in young players and use them, but seemingly won't take from the academy. I don't know why.

As for this signing, Seems we are lining up a bunch of kids who might be good enough to replace Navas and hoping one makes it.

it doesnt hurt to continue to sign these young players, even if 20% become very good players either we can sell them and make a profit or watch them grow....win win here

Player trading can be a major revenue resource and it's the reason Chelsea were able to move away from even sniffing FFP. A guy like this or Zuculini offers no downsides at all at this cost. A lot of people here simply have no foresight.

Like most youth talents, he's a lottery ticket, basically. Not all youth talents work out but the more you have, the better chance one of them ends up sticking.

It's because both value the trait of a player being proven over a player being good enough - if a player is proven at the right level then it goes without saying (or should) that they are good enough so you get both requisite traits and less of the gamble. At this level we simply can't afford to allow one player to learn from their mistakes because those mistakes could place our future as a top-level club at jeopardy. When the difference between winning the league and coming second can be +6GD (as we have witnessed) and the difference between coming first and second can be the catalyst in a club losing confidence and sliding down the table, possibly not to return easily if at all, then you have to treat every goal scored, let alone every point won, as a potential make-or-break moment in the club's future.

At least, that is why some managers/clubs simply can't afford to play youths. Not sure if I agree, and I'm certainly not sure that I'm happy for it, but that's what causes the reluctance.

He looks a big lad and has made his senior debut, I would imagine he'll train with the first team to be assessed.

The glass is half empty then?
