Mendy is no better than Kolarov defensively imo just more athletic.. He won't get the shit Kolarov does though
I think Kolarov has been a good servant but you hit the nail on the head. Mendy is more athletic and with his pace will help get out of danger when we are high up the pitch (Chelsea's goals on the counter last year).

If Kolarov goes, somebody will. My money is on him, Walker or Danilo.

Sadly true. If I were advising any of them, I'd recommend cementing one of 'that lot' in the first derby, picking up a head cut, and playing through the pain with a blood-stained shirt. It might, just might, buy him time with the vocal fickle.

Good player that I respect. Did a lot for this club but if we can get 6m for him that's good business, sell him and put that money towards a CB.

90% of Kolarov's defensive problems are because he's too slow and not fit enough these days to get back to stop attacks after going forwards or against fast opposition, so that's a bizarre comment - he'll be a much better defender purely by virtue of physically being able to keep up.

I'm not in a rush to see Kolarov go though, if we don't have to I'd rather keep him.

My favourite player in the squad, the guys a king.
Reason every manager has kept him around is he has every single top quality footballing attribute you could want
Mentality, technique, physicality and a proper personality
Shame he has no pace at all, but fans should appreciate what he has done for the team and particularly taking into account how many positions he played last year

Still think he was a better option in the deep lying pivot role than fernando away at spurs, where his pace wouldn't be an issue

That's like saying Micah was our best CB because he was our quickest so could bail himself out when people go past him...Much rather someone who can prevent them going past in the first place at which Mendy is no better than Kolarov.

Micah was a right back.

How many games of Mendy's have you actually seen? From the ~10 Monaco games I saw last season he's a much better defender 1v1, has the pace to catch up when caught up the pitch and his positioning is something Guardiola will work on. Being caught high up the pitch is a completely normal thing for a fullback playing in a system as attacking as Monaco's last year, and having the pace to recover when that happens doesn't make you a bad defender.

The idea he's worse than Kolarov defensively is ridiculous, I can only assume this is some weird thing because Kolarov is leaving.

Perhaps I'm alone in this line of thinking, but if when the window shuts and we have a defensive unit of...

RB; Walker/Danilo/Ferna
LB; Mendy/Danilo/Kolarov
CH; Kompany/Stones/Otamendi/Kolarov

I actually think that's a pretty solid set of defenders, with good versatility and athleticism. Kolarov gets plenty of grief, sometimes understandably so, but he's a useful squad player and a good option at centre half when we play the likes of West Brom, Palace, Burnley etc at home, who come with the sole intention of sitting back; his range of passing from the back is very useful and could mean we can rest Vinny for the more 'taxing' games....or at least have him on the bench for when we fuck up and need some defensive solidarity at the back :)

good one

Great...hes headed to Roma, making Monaco and Southhampton laugh at us even more now. We are dumping players to quickly and are stuck over paying for replacements.

I just have to laugh at these comments.

You actually think Monaco's VP is looking at rumours of Kolarov to Roma and thinking "This changes everything!"?

"Up the price by 10m - that guy who was never, ever going to start as LB for them is leaving!!!"

Monaco's VP knows we are desperate, because with Kolarov gone we literally don't have anyone with experience to play there. He will wait us out until we cave and pay what he wants. Monaco has all the leverage, this is obvious or else this deal would be done. We all know Kolarov would never start, but at least we have an experienced body to throw there.
