Great post, as i`ve lived in Gorton all my 53 years i remember Donaldsons really well. I bought a brown leather casey from there in 1973/74. I also got a City away shirt from Roy Clarks. I was always in Donaldsons looking at the footballs and other stuff. Bye the way the ball was like a round brick with a lace! Nobody headed it twice!
Another great shop was Cowans Cycles just across Hyde Road. I remember gazing at an Eddie Merckx bike in there in the early 70`s, great memories, cheers.

Yes, I remember getting a bike from Cowans, it was run by two brother's...other shops in Gorton were Phil Green's hardware, Jerina's and Crawford's butchers, Wheeler's music shop, Catlow's corner shop, next to Abbey Hey School, Bridge's newsagents, plus the market of course......

I think 'Bicycle Doctor' is the only bike shop along Dickenson Road now .....

I certainly remember hyde sports.

They would sell anyone anything.
I wemember being young and buying a combat knife and gas powered bb gun.

The trail or destruction that followed was monumental.

Used to buy a lot of cricket stuff there too.

2 sides to every coin eh.

I can vaguely recall the shops that once stood near the bus depot on Hyde Road around the early seventies , but it is only vaguely ..... when i was about 15/16 i used to go out with a girl who attended the old Nicholls Ardwick High School which was nearby , and has long since been demolished , and i was always around there back then.
Memories of end of term scraps with them back in the stone ages (I went to St Gregory's).
Yep, i remember the scraps with Nichools in the 70`s, i went to Gregs a well.

-- Tue Dec 25, 2012 8:51 pm --

Bought a pair of Royals and Docs from the shoe shop near the Suburban Pub but cannot remember the name. My brother worked at Jerinas and there was a cafe facing them. Just shows what a great area Gorton used to be, all the shops , pubs and then Belle vue as well.
