Alex Sandro interest

They aren't. But when it gets to the CL Round of 16, this is our area of weakness that is exploited the most. Defensively neither are good enough at the highest level.

When we were in for Mangala from last January I watched Porto whenever they were on and I don't actually think this guy is particularly good.

He was the difference between Porto beating Bayern and getting thumped the next leg. With him they had no joy down the right at all. Then he got suspended for the next leg, Guardiola played Lahm at RM and they got half their goals from him crossing from the right, where Sandro's replacement was shite.

Make of that what you will. It is worth remembering that it was next to Sandro that Mangala was seen as worth £32m.

I wouldn't say he was the difference. Their whole team played well in the first leg. The biggest difference was that Bayern passed the ball better in the second leg as Porto weren't pressing them all over the pitch like they did at home. Porto scored goals because centre halves made mistakes through Porto pressing them. This didn't happen in the second leg and Bayern just ran riot.

Quality player, would be absolutely ideal to sort our leftback problem, but only if we can get rid of Kolarov. He's been particularly outstanding in the CL as well, really steps up. With only a year left on his contract, Porto will be pretty keen to let him go. Hopefully their reported interest in Edin is true tbh(might be, they do need a striker pretty badly), two birds and one stone and all that

Do you class him as an elite left back mate? He looked fantastic in the first leg against Bayern, defensively solid and really good going forward.

I don't think there are any obviously better all round leftbacks tbh. Not exactly a postion full of stand out players at the moment, but he's all round pretty excellent. Much better defensively than most "elite" leftbacks in the world at the moment and technically excellent. At the moment we have to chose between a guy who can't defend and a guy who can't attack, Alex Sandro can do both.

EDIT Should probably mention I'm only comparing him to available leftbacks, as there is no point at all comparing him to people who aren't gettable

It really is baffling that we have gone all out to strengthen the team in every area other than the one that has been a glaring weakness for as long as I care to remember? Is it simply a case of kolarov refusing to budge? has he even had any suitors?

A shame as this lad appears to fit the bill perfectly.

I am surprised that given the number of left backs linked to Juve that Kolarov hasn't been linked with a move there. It's not as though we aren't interested in any of their players...

Agree. Our left hand side has been a weak area for years, Kolarov and Clichy go awol, meaning Mangala gets dragged out of defense. It needs solidifying
