Conversely, you could dispense with his services at the most opportune time (say the next six months) and then have him and Hancock serve as scapegoats for anything the pandemic inquiry finds. As much as the Conservatives are going to be in a pickle, the Opposition will have to be sure about what they (the parties) really want, too. Better to stomach a lame duck prime minister and two years of internecine warfare, which could lead to a Conservative defeat in 2024, or better to face a fresh prime minister at the polls in 2022/2023?

The latter is inevitable now. If he doesn't resign then he'll be eviscerated by the local elections in May, and get knifed by the Tories then.

The question is who would replace him? Pretty much all the front bench will be implicated in this to some extent and even if they have plausible deniability the fact that they are giving him their unequivocal support isn't a good look. All the full on Brexiteers with any talent (and many without) will already be ministers and all ministers will be tainted by this. This leaves elderly and new inexperienced backbenchers, and old style one nation Tories, none of which will have any credibility as far as delivering the agenda that their sponsors want. Their propaganda outlets (Express, Mail, Telegraph, Sun) have their work cut out to retrieve it for them.

If he’s to be knifed, then I’m sure he’d prefer March 15th…

They would expect to take a dent at that election, though its size may nudge more Conservative MPs to side against him.

Sunak. He’s the one I suspect Labour would least like to fight. The left-leaning papers are already questioning his experience and competence, but deep down I’m sure they’d rather face Raab, Truss, Patel, or Javid than face Sunak.

Asked to respond to the announcement of Downing Street's apology, Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

Asked why Number 10 had apologised rather than Mr Johnson himself, the spokesman said: "Well, again, the prime minister said earlier misjudgements have been made and it's right people apologise, as the prime minister did earlier this week.

Fucking coward
