You're right in one respect. The buffoonery is all show which gets geriatric duffers to like him. There is no doubt that he is very intelligent and calculating, however the strong impression I get from him, is that it's all about him and everything else is irrelevant. He'd throw anyone or any position straight under a bus if it were to benefit him personally. If ditching Brexit meant that he would stay as PM for a few years, he'd do it in a heartbeat.

I doubt that part but he may have no option if he is stopped from taking the hard Brexit option...

Boris about to appoint Dominic Cummings as a special adviser, former Gove man and brexit realist. He's not a fan of the ERG, this is from him:-

Promising all things to all people is a consistent theme with brexit. Someone isn't going to get what they want and this move suggests Boris will start upsetting the brexit nutters in the ERG.

This and the interview with Matt Hancock on R4 Today where he categorically ruled out a pact with the brexit party leads me to suspect that Boris will go a lot softer on brexit than he has led people to believe. Hancock will get a ministerial job today and was very much speaking as a representative of the new government.

If Boris doesn't do a deal with the BXP then he will know that a GE is not an option as he would lose. Odds on a WA passing or a second ref going up - maybe even a WA subject to a 2nd Ref. Hold on to your hats if that goes through.

Mogg wont take any job as to take a ministerial role means you have to resign all other paid positions. Borris will have to take the hit of not working for the daily hail. Mogg however is up to his eyeballs in hedge funds and he wont give it up. It also doesn't suit his style of spouting rubbish from the sidelines that doesn't ever need to materialise into anything of substance.
Mogg doesn't have, or manage, any hedge funds.
