BJ has really excelled himself here. Does anyone really think he flew back from a jolly only to change his mind.

Those MPs that backed him will feel like right dicks.

With any luck this will be the end of his career. Rishy should be fine from here and they can’t change leader again. BJ will probably lose his seat. He should have stayed in the pool.

A suggestion in his ‘not standing’ speech that a GE is inevitable, given the rifts in the Tory Party.

I have been attracted because I led our party into a massive election victory less than three years ago - and I believe I am therefore uniquely placed to avert a general election now.
You can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.

And though I have reached out to both Rishi (Sunak) and Penny (Mordaunt) - because I hoped that we could come together in the national interest - we have sadly not been able to work out a way of doing this.
