Alexis Sanchez

Let me ask you something though. I think you're after an out and out goal scorer to play through the middle and stick chances away. While Sanchez is an amazing player, he's not really that total central striker that I think you need.

What do you think would have been a better move in the long run, 50m for a 28 year old Sanchez, or 50m for a 26 year old Lacazette, a regular 30 goal a season striker?

I'm not asking this because we've got Laca and I'm trying to make myself feel better, it's a genuine question as I think Laca would have stuck away quite a few of the chances you had at Brighton today as he has the highest conversion rate in Europe, nearly 20% higher than Sanchez.

I just think maybe you're looking in the wrong direction to solve your goal scoring frailties.

Well that's your opinion stated - in response:

"he's not really that total central striker that I think you need" - we don't really require a Total Central Striker, other than to sit on the bench and watch our extremely fluid front 5/6 work wonders, it's just not the way Pep sets up.

"What do you think would have been a better move in the long run, 50m for a 28 year old Sanchez, or 50m for a 26 year old Lacazette, a regular 30 goal a season striker" - really?? Lacazette has spent 7 seasons in France, stick Sanchez or Aguero over there they'd have the same conversion rate. I don't think you're making fair comparisons with that one

Finally

"to solve your goal scoring frailties" - let's look at the last few seasons eh:

2016/17 - scored 80 (3 more than Arsenal) finished 3rd
2015/16 - scored 71 (6 more than Arsenal) - although we did finish 4th
2014/15 - scored 83 (12 more than Arsenal) - finished 2nd
2013/14 - scored 102 (34 more than Arsenal) - Champions

doesn't look that frail to me ;-)

(I didn't start following football in 2012 btw - I've had a season card for nearly 20 years)

The thing I don't really get, about that, is how do we know in which games Aguero & Jesus are going to miss from 6 yards ?

Would Sanchez start in place of Aguero v Everton because Aguero will fuck up or is it Jesus who will fuck up, so Sanchez starts with Aguero ?

We are talking about 2 of the best forwards in the world here & really, both should be pretty reliable to score. If just one of them has gone to shit, sell him. But what many are in effect saying, is we can't trust either of them, so we have to sign Sanchez, in order to score.

If one had to be left out v Everton, it would absolutely have to be Jesus. Aguero won us the game.

That wasn't the plan re signing Sanchez.

And it could actually be the case that Aguero & Jesus hit form & bang in goals every game & Sanchez misses.

Imo if we sign him, he'll be holding back Sané & Sterling more often than replacing Aguero.

I've thought about pretty much all of these points, and they are fair.

Thing is, we cannot mess around too much this season hinging our hopes on Sane and Sterling and even Jesus if we want to really secure our place among the elite clubs. The window is wide open for us to go farther in CL this season due to a few things happening this season that are in our favour (Chelsea "crisis," Barca weakened, PSG with Neymar but may have to weaken elsewhere, Bayern aging/not quite as good as they were) and we need to make progress. I love Sane and Raz and I want them to get their chances, but I also know that we are taking a big risk relying upon them as we lacked goals from the wing positions last season.

Alexis will muff them up too, but he is far more clinical and we could use another proven goal scorer. Jesus did last season, and I'm not saying he won't nor do I want to go too far with this comparison, but Nacho was heralded by a lot of our fans after his previous season under Pellegrini. We thought he could only go up, and look what happened? Part of that is due to the system change, but age/experience factors into consistency more so than other variables. Think Renato Sanches, Martial or Coman as well as Nacho...super hyped two seasons ago but taken steps back since. Jesus has the goods, more so than Nacho I know, but even if he is in form, placing Alexis out there with he and Kun gives us a better chance against the best clubs.

We are playing that 3-5-2 a bit more now, so I can get the worry about game time for Sane and Raz because we may see them even less, but I think Pep will go with what is working or who is in form, mostly, with some tactical changes before and in game that will still see players get time on the pitch.

When we play the 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 from last season however the reality is that Sane and Sterling need time to develop, but also are just not as good at this point. It's tricky balance, but I trust that Pep will find a way to work this out with Alexis in the squad. Other reality is that that will change surely as Kun and Sanchez age.

I think the finishing has just become a "thing" now, and it's playing on the strikers minds - particularly in games like yesterdays.

What we need is a fixture like Palace game at the end of last season where we stuck a few past and the floodgates opened, with 15 in those last 4 games.

Get them on a roll and the pressure will go off and everything will just flow nicely.

If so then its ridiculous, we scored 3 in each of our last 3 pre season games, and 2 yesterday, 11 goals in 4 games, if (yes I know pre season + 1 league game), we keep that ratio up, its 104 goals in a league season, if that is in their "heads" they need to grow a pair, however its not in their heads, they've just started back so aren't sharp yet.

In reality, its in the heads of idiots on here, who just want a new shiny striker, regardless of the actual firepower we already possess.

Personally I'm not even slightly worried at this point after 1 game, and anyone who is, isn't being rational, or is simply worrying about nothing, just because united scored 4 at home against a particularly shite WHU.

What you're failing to realise is that a shiny new striker will never miss a chance ;-)

I like the cut of your jib.
