Perhaps, what is clear is that one of the fundamentals that works in this Pep side is frightening pace on the flanks, when it's not there, we aren't as threatening (despite the wasted chances on Wednesday). Bernardo moving inside would be better for him and the team, I think Pep has difficult choices on who he buys because it will affect how we play and there are different aspects to our squad that work really well but aren't necessarily able to work all together at the same time.
The summer will be fascinating with the question of where do we get a "30 goal in the league" striker from, how do we keep the width and utilise Sane and Sterling and do we buy young talent to cover them. If we have 5 in midfield to rotate KDB, both Silva's, Gundogan and Foden, who do we use to cover Dinho and will it be a change in style? Add 2 CBs and another LB and a choice between Danilo and Maffeo, it's a big summer and will shape how these team moves forward. At the moment it's an extraordinary run with a patched up side whose strengths have been born out by the fact we've had to patch it up, but I'm sure it's not what Pep exactly had in mind at times but it gives him food for thought by the fact it's working.
I think you may be right & that the team, as it is now, is not what Pep initially envisaged. Where he has been incredible, is signing the players & seeing the opportunities, to evolve from the 'old' City team, into this machine with a percentage of super athletes, whilst actually improving the football intelligence. But he could just of easily, have decided Sterling & Sané wasn't the way to go, played with a flicky tricky Barca style team including Gundo, Silva, Silva, KDB, or gone for an Italian style back 3 with solid defence, etc etc.
What we have never seen, in any version of setup is the suicidal wide open shite Pellegrini served up, with Yaya on his own v 5 oppo midfielders & a 20 yard gap in front & behind.
Which brings me back to Bernardo in a way & whether he can quickly develop to be a solid enough player to do that central job, without leaving holes in it & then whether Sanchez could actually learn it quicker than him, if required to do so.
