Perhaps, what is clear is that one of the fundamentals that works in this Pep side is frightening pace on the flanks, when it's not there, we aren't as threatening (despite the wasted chances on Wednesday). Bernardo moving inside would be better for him and the team, I think Pep has difficult choices on who he buys because it will affect how we play and there are different aspects to our squad that work really well but aren't necessarily able to work all together at the same time.

The summer will be fascinating with the question of where do we get a "30 goal in the league" striker from, how do we keep the width and utilise Sane and Sterling and do we buy young talent to cover them. If we have 5 in midfield to rotate KDB, both Silva's, Gundogan and Foden, who do we use to cover Dinho and will it be a change in style? Add 2 CBs and another LB and a choice between Danilo and Maffeo, it's a big summer and will shape how these team moves forward. At the moment it's an extraordinary run with a patched up side whose strengths have been born out by the fact we've had to patch it up, but I'm sure it's not what Pep exactly had in mind at times but it gives him food for thought by the fact it's working.

I think you may be right & that the team, as it is now, is not what Pep initially envisaged. Where he has been incredible, is signing the players & seeing the opportunities, to evolve from the 'old' City team, into this machine with a percentage of super athletes, whilst actually improving the football intelligence. But he could just of easily, have decided Sterling & Sané wasn't the way to go, played with a flicky tricky Barca style team including Gundo, Silva, Silva, KDB, or gone for an Italian style back 3 with solid defence, etc etc.

What we have never seen, in any version of setup is the suicidal wide open shite Pellegrini served up, with Yaya on his own v 5 oppo midfielders & a 20 yard gap in front & behind.

Which brings me back to Bernardo in a way & whether he can quickly develop to be a solid enough player to do that central job, without leaving holes in it & then whether Sanchez could actually learn it quicker than him, if required to do so.

Oh jog on and do your own fucking research then. It’s not anyone else’s fault that we all know the rule and you don’t.
thanks to all posters for your help. The Christmas spirit is well and truly alive on this forum! happy New year!

Sanchez offers us a great alternative to Silva.

He also covers poor form or injuries in all the forward and wide positions.

I was iffy about it in the summer but more than eager now.

I agree, we missed a trick after we won the League under Mancini although we had FFP over heads but we're in a much better place right now, there's no better time to react than when you've got your knee on your rivals throat

That was the main missed opportunity. Regardless of FFP, we did bad business then. FFP was a factor when we gave our whole transfer budget to Porto but more judicious use of those funds would have helped.

Hopefully, lessons have been learned and FFP is not too much of a limiting factor.

I see a fair bit of Kev in Sanchez, in his willingness to try ambitious passes and put his faith in his team-mates that they'll do what they're supposed to and be there. I think he would love that at City. I can see that midfield working well with Dinho/DM with a ball-retainer (Dave, Gundy, Bernardo) alongside someone more direct (KDB, Sanchez and I would say maybe Goretzka), then you have really interesting options and a lot of variety and combinations that can be used, whilst being able to use some of them across other areas of the pitch.

I think Pep's idealistic vision, and one that he can come closest to achieving here, is to send out 11 players and the opposition have absolutely no idea what combination they're going to face, and it be so fluid and flexible that they can park the bus, but we'll just shuffle the deck and completely bemuse them. We saw it best at OT so far. I think the core things that are key to it, real pace and skill out wide and a striker who will score regularly to ease the pressure, are the bits he has to fit into that vision and makes me wonder what we'll do in those areas in the summer. Sanchez is a short-term solution out wide at best for me, and I would rather the next Sane also comes here rather than go to our rivals and allow them to start pulling off imitations of us. We have 1 genuine left winger, and 1 genuine right winger, in the squad, and I don't think any of the targets we've been linked with really adds to that in sufficient quality.

Sanchez won't be happening in January, we will get him on a free in the summer if he really wants to come and be apart of this special club. That way he can leave Arsenal with no hard feelings which suits both player and club. I'm all for him in the summer which will give the players the boost they'll need for the next season. Hopefully it's a done deal for then.
