I believe that would about the Van Persie transfer, classic Wenger.
Fact is if someone wants an Arsenal player they usually leave and that player usually goes on to do better things.

Nah I want him this summer, massively improves our chances in the league and champions league, plus there would be the biggest Arsenal meltdown of all time.
Wenger won't leave next summer. He just signed a 2 year deal and there's a 99.9% chance he sees it out.
Maybe the board will intervene?
They might step in and tell Wenger that they don't want to take a gamble with £50m+.
Wenger has signed a 2 year deal as well, so unless they get relegated I can't see him leaving.
Pretty sure that a) Wenger will stay for two years and b) Arsenal's board won't take a £50m hit to keep an unhappy player on their books.
Im playing devils advocate here by the way....
On recollection isn't it the first time he has signed more than a year extension for a long time! That tells me he doesn't want all the media yearly of asking him is he or when is he going to sign his contract. Personally I think he be off next after next season. Oh getting Sanchez on a free next season is fine by me.

I want him this summer as well mate, but (and I have taken alcohol on board tonight) there would be something rather deserving about Arsenal getting nothing for him this time next year

Oh absolutely, getting him next summer for free would still be absolutely brilliant.
However, there's just something about swooping in this summer, putting pressure on Wenger, Arsenal and ultimately leading to an Arsenal fan meltdown that I would absolutely enjoy.
Imagine if they kept him for a year and he broke his leg 2 weeks in. These are the kind of questions they'll be asking themselves. A lot has to happen next season for Sanchez to be worth £50m, and it's probably the most risk averse club in the league.
That's one of the reasons why I wouldn't be gutted if we missed out on Sanchez this summer because it sounds like we'll go all out for Dembele or maybe Mbappe. I mean we might even do that if we get Sanchez.
It's good to know we're already strong in that position and we've got options as well. If we start missing out on defensive targets that's when i'll be worried.
I suspect if we didn't get him this summer, we wouldn't wait around another year even if he was on a free.
