Alf Grey - payback time

I remember getting to Maine Rd with my Dad about 5 oclock(prob 7:30 kick off).
Massive queues outside the kippax cos it was pay on the gate!
Just before the gates opened it kicked off big.

Inside I stood at the front wall and when we all sang your a B@$tard Referee a copper grabbed me and was going to throw me out but my dad stepped in and reminded him that there was 40 odd thousand of us singing it.

Watched this travesty unfold from the wall on the front of the Kippax. The Liverpool defence didn't even appeal, they were trudging back to halfway staring at their feet as Clemence went apeshit at them. He even booted the ball in anger at conceding. They were as stunned as anybody that it was disallowed.

I remember Phil Thompson next day saying he thought there was nothing wrong with the goal.. even tho he's got a big nose, he was still honest.

Ah! for those of tender years Rodger Kirkpatrick was a ringer for Harry Secombe in Mr Pickwick.Pure comedy was Rodger, lambchop size sideburns.Don,t know who knew the rules better Rodger, or Mr Pickwick.

It wasn't just the disallowed goal, Grey compounded things in the 2nd half by awarding a very dodgy free kick from which Liverpool scored the winner,

It wasn't just the disallowed goal (IIRC, Grey claimed it was ruled out for "illegal jumping", which is just laughable if you look at the replays) and the phantom free kick (btw, it was Ray Kennedy who scored, not Souness as someone said earlier in the thread). It was his whole performance that night. Laughably one-sided. I'm normally pretty philosophical about these things where City are concerned, but that game makes me fume even 30 years later. It really isn't an exaggeration to say that Grey cheated us that night. An absolute disgrace.

I remember that semi- The kippax was rammed and after going ballistic after the goal, no one was really sure if it had been disallowed or not.

We played really well in the second leg.

First thing I thought when we drew them, its been a long wait but lets set the record straight on this one.
Me too
First thing I thought of was our disallowed goal in the first few minutes and then ripping them a new one without scoring

Oh yes - just whilst we are putting all these gremlins from our history to bed , heres another one, robbed in 1981, scarred as a kid, payback time !!!

Started a thread elsewhere with this story, but I'd forgotten his name. How could I forget the cheating bastard?

I remember that game like it was yesterday. Alf Grey cheated us that night cos we had dared to score after 3 mins. There was no other reason.

Petrusha is correct, it was most definitely Ray Kennedy who scored for Liverpool that night. It's one of those things that sticks in the memory and as I recall it was very late on.

Bearing in mind that we had a weakened team as 3 Bond signings were cup-tied I didn't think we had a chance in the 2nd Leg. Particularly as Anfield was a fortress in those days.

As it happened, me and my mates came out of Anfield shaking our heads at how we didn't win it over there. We outplayed them that night and a lot of Dippers in the pub afterwards were admitting to us they got lucky.

Payback time is just around the corner.

As did kennedy... It was a good goal... don't forget, we were very unlucky to not win at Anfield. We battered them... Dave bennet hit the bar, which if went in would have seen us through to the final

Its been a long time coming. So proud coming out of Anfield that night because of the way we outplayed them but absolutely sick at the outcome So come on City erase the result from my memory.
