It's the typical over-the-top English media again. Rooney is quite a good player, nothing more nothing less. But the way the tabloids put it he's the greatest human being ever to grace a football pitch - which is of course absurd.
He very very seldom does it against the big teams and I honestly can't remember the last time he had a good game in an England shirt.
As for reaching his peak, I think he's over that now. This last season he had to single-handedly carry the rags and in the last two internationals he's looked jaded and tired, and when that happens he gets frustrated and starts to lose his temper (witness his petulance again today against the Japanese).
At the time of writing I don't think Rooney is a liability, but I seriously do believe he soon will be.
