All Time Top 1100 Albums (Aerosmith - Big Ones) P265

I listened to this non stop when I was a teen, led me into the whole Aerosmith back catalogue and a big influence on me wanting to pick up the guitar.

Quite a journey that band has been on, and you can really see the influence of different technology and sounds, as well as trends, as they move from the 70s to the 90s. I was also blown away by Tyler's vocals and, when I got to see them a few years later live, his showmanship. I'd be hard pressed to say I didn't like any of the songs on this release, and they led me directly to snap up ever other Aerosmith album available, and to appreciate their abilities and sound throughout the decades. Very happy memories of secondary school and college, especially as this was one of the albums you could put on to get the girls to listen also, rather than Metallica or Maiden.

Also remember well those 90s music videos with Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone, yes please!

Personally it's 10/10, it had a huge impact on me at a time I was discovering the world, beer, girls and rock and roll. They were songs than most of the kids knew and could at least sing along to during the chorus, even the ones not so much into rock music, helped me see how lead and rhythm guitar can work together, and so I will always associate with good times.

The songs themselves , well I love Joe Perry's riffing and Tyler's vocals so I love them all. The slide guitar on rag doll, the decadence of love in an elevator, the emotion of what it takes or angel, the rising desperation in livin' on the edge. But I totally get why people who enjoyed their earlier stuff like toy's in the attic, get your wings etc didn't warm to the new Aerosmith sound which is exclusively presented here. It's much less raw and punchy, more reliant on studio magic to get that sound, but for a teenager just finding out all about beer, guitars, girls and MTV, it was the right album at the right time.

Greatest hits albums can be a bit of a con sometimes if you're a fan already, or if it's yet another repackage of the same old songs (and dance, hur hur) but sometimes, as for me in this case, they can prove a perfect gateway into a new artist and their back catalogue.

This was a good listen. I'm not really familiar with much of Aerosmith's catalogue, but I did own Pump at one stage and remember buying the "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" single.

What surprised me listening to this collection is that a lot of the songs aren't just straightforward hard rock. "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" is such a superb song and the way that brass enhances the sound would have made it a great pick for threespires' recent playlist. Ditto for "Rag Doll".

Then there's "What It Takes" which has some really nice accordion and "Janey's Got A Gun", which I think is second best to "Dude".

As a compilation album, it does run on a bit too long, but it was never boring and definitely worth 8/10.

I had a listen to this today and enjoyed it for what it was. You can hear that in the 70s they were definitely on the glam rock side of things. This is less my thing than the stuff they put out in the 80s, but it was a good listen all the same.

Finally got round to listening to this a few times through - although I had this on CD years ago

Feels a bit of cheat to review a ‘best of’ for Top list of Albums

Nevertheless, Aerosmith don’t disappoint- big crashing loud songs one after another , what I forgot though was just how many power ballads they did and pulled off

But it’s the rock songs I enjoyed the most ‘Deuces Are Wild’ ‘Janie’s Got A Gun’ ‘Love In Elevator’ and of course ‘Dude (Looks Like A Lady)

Great stuff really

8/10

Do you have a minimum number of votes,,do you not just average it out?

Put me down for a 7. I listen to albums on here if they interest me, but I dont score as it isn't a regular thing and dont want to be inconsistent. If short however, happy to add in.
