All Time Top 1100 Albums (Aerosmith - Big Ones) P265

Too true. And think about Lennon being shot at age 40. His solo work was just taking off (again) at the time. Imagine (pun not intended) the music he might have crafted in his 40s and beyond. We think about Hendrix or Cobain or D. Boon for young musician deaths and what might have been but even at 40, even after the Beatles, he might have just been getting started.

Inconceivable loss of talent.
Yes very sad to be robbed of his life like that.
I read an interview, one of his last, with, can't remember who it was with, but the interviewer asked the age old question will The Beatles ever get back together again.
John was very positive about it and said he had been talking to Paul, he stated that it just needed one of them to take charge (probably Paul) and push the thing along.
He also said he would be more interested in making an album than doing any live shows.

It sounded like all animosities had been laid aside and I think it would have happened if not for bastard Chapman.

Love the Help! album, and the title track is still one of my favourite songs.
Deep Purple did it as a cover version arranged by the keyboard player Jon Lord who said as well as a pop song it was also a great ballad. Give it a listen

Yes.
And this is another one of my favourite versions by John Farnham.
It's a beautiful ballad.

Very few despite the break ups and animosity at the time don't bury the hatchet with the passage of time.

The Eagles hell would freeze over comes to mind immediately.

Don't get me wrong individually and in collaboration with others Paul and John were still masters of their craft however together no matter who took the credit the total was far greater than individual parts.

No doubt John had a lot left in him and while the second time around is often compared to the first time and for devotees often fails to reach the heights of the first collaboration it would have been interesting if they knocked their heads together again.

As we have seen, there are rock stars who have gone long past being forty that have produced great music and / or great shows. I doubt that I saw McCartney in concert until he was c.50 and the last time he was c.70 but all three times I've seen him in concert, he's been brilliant.

Whether a reformed Beatles could have been tempted to tour in their 40, 50's etc is now unknowable but the staggering amounts of money on offer would have perhaps tempted them into the world's largest stadia. Paul certainly knows how to put on a modern rock show.

You mention the Eagles, who I should have been going to see at Wembley next month but it's been cancelled, and they do a superb show and a great job of mixing both band and solo tracks into their show, which virtually becomes the Joe Walsh show in its second half to get the audience rocking. Would have loved to see the Beatles belting out Live and Let Die with a Kiss style extravaganza of flash bombs and flame columns going off all around them :) and the audience still able to hear the music.

Never listened to a whole Beatles album after actively avoiding them for ever.. However a friend just kept telling me to try .. Maybe Help wouldn’t have been his choice for me tho.. My mum died when I was in my early thirties, she had amongst others that I still have, the single Hey Jude , it was her favourite Beatles track.. This alone has bumped up my score a tad even tho I enjoyed the rest of the album more than I thought I would.. That said , I wouldn’t put it on again lol... But of a ramble sorry...6/10

This one half sentence should give you an idea of my problem with the Eagles. I'll take "Rocky Mountain Way" and, especially, "Life's Been Good" before anything they did, even if Hotel California was the first record I ever bought when I was 12.

I could never in my wildest dreams see John Lennon on stage singing Live and Let Die.

Never been a massive Beatles fan but i like/love some of the songs and i do appreciate how significant their music was...so...with that in mind, here's my opinion song by song:
Help ; Good pop tune ..i like how the harmony line is sung before the actual line (if you get me) ...7
The Night Before; another decent pop tune... 7
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away; Simple but so good ...I'm gonna learn to play it..7
I Need You; This is the kind of 60's twee pop that just goes over my head ..4
Another Girl; Same as above ..4
You're Gonna Lose That Girl; Same as ...4
Ticket To Ride; Fcking ace! Love Ringo's drums on this one..8
Act Naturally; Shite.."do you wanna sing this song, Ringo?"...3
It's Only Love; Ok..5
You Like Me Too Much...60s twee pop...4
Tell Me What You See...again, juts not my thing..4
I've Just Seen A Face; Slow down Macca! Is this Skiffle? ..5
Yesterday; Class..8
Dizzy Miss Lizzy; Nah...can't be arsed with that one..3.
That's an average of a round 5/10 but that seems a bit low, so...... 6/10

Interesting that this is the first beatles album to come up as it possibly my least favourite, but still contains a lot of classic and excellent songs.

There are actually 2 covers on this I belive? Dizzy and act naturally. Imo these are the worst songs on the album. Which is interesting as the covers on the previous album, For sale, are perhaps what prevents that being an absolute classic. They seem to have put these covers on there just to get them on record as they were staples of their live shows, which would be axed in a year's time. A hard day's night released the year before had zero covers and was better than this. I have always thought that if they had a done a covers album afte that and combined the best fresh material for this and for sale, you would have contender for their greatest album. However at this point albums were just a collection of songs, usually aimed at getting people to the live shows, the singles were where the money was at. it was only after rubber soul bands started to take them seriously and try not include filler.

For those questioning why, the reason Ringo as given a song on each album was to appease his legions of fans. I don't think ringo even wanted to sing on most of them.

Anyway yes there's filler on this but it's a solid 7/10 for me. Perhaps a harsh score considering the amount of classics on it but it's unlikely any others from the fab four will score lower.

P. S the film is beyond shit, aside from the songs
Lol, aside from the songs?
Reminds me of that fillet steak & chips I had the other night. The meal was beyond shit, apart from the gorgeous fillet steak.

The rooftop footage from 69 aside, it’s the best filmed song footage. Some funny moments, a good looking cast, fabulous photography in some wonderful locations. Oh and it’s in colour. And it’s not got yellow submarine in it.
A highly recommended Beatles film for me. Just had a quick look on Amazon too, rated 4.7/5 there too, so not too many disappointed purchasers either. Maybe just cos the music though. I’m not suggesting it’s up there with Dr Shivago which I think came out the same year maybe, but beyond shit is a tad extreme.
