Allsvenskan 25/26

The race at the top goes on and nerves showing.

Mjällby had s tough first half and were losing 1-0 to Djurgården. However Mjällby did what they have done all seasin. They dug in, pushed hard and believed in their system and they were rewarded with a 95 equaliser.

Hammarby showed nerves and fatigue and conceded and early goal at home to GAIS. Their captain Besara stepped a few minutes later with a cracker. Hammarby spent the rest of the game huff puffing but failing to make their effort count. Instead GAIS scored a goal late to pile on pressure on the Stockholm team.

Thank you for the information on the Swedish League.
Went to the IFK vs. AIK game on Sunday (much more fun than PNE vs. QPR).
A great atmosphere with a sell-out crowd of c.18,000.
Perhaps it was due to being a fixture of 2 big rivals, but it was the best atmosphere of games I've seen abroad (luckily have been to matches at Hamburg, Sporting Lisbon, A.C. Milan & Barca).
Gothenburg shaded it 2-1, but just about deserved it.
Certainly makes the fight for 3rd place (in Europe) very interesting.
Please keep sending updates, as the Swedish League is exciting and interesting...

It really feels like a Leicester seasonin Sweden. Only this title fight contender is even more impressive when comparing budgets and performances.

Almost all the teams played on sunday for some reason I do not know. The pick of the matches before kick off was Malmö v IFK Götebprg and Sirius v Hammarby.

Malmö were gunning fpr 3 points to stay ahead pf the chasing pack for aplace in europe. It is a match between the two biggest clubs in the 3rd and 2nd biggest cities in Sweden. They are also by far the most successful clubs both domestically and in Europe. It was a heated and tense affair

In the other match Hammarby travelled on hour north from Stockholm to the student town of Uppsala to face Sirius. This was a must win game for Hammarby to apply pressure on Mjällby at the top. Sirius is tricky team as they are very patchy and roght mow they are in decent vein of form.

Finally on mondat the league leaders Mjällby travelled to Gothenburg for a very tough away match against the inform team of the division GAIS.

It was time for matchday 23 out 30 over the weekend and monday.

At the top Mjällby headed to Deferfors. Degerfors are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table. They tried playing a compact low block against the league leaders, also refused to water the pitch to make it even harder for the more skillled team to outplay them. Mjällby found a way to break down the opposition by pilong their goant defenders in the box and getting one perfect deliver in.

Hammarby watched the leaders gain 3 points on the Saturday and knew that they headed in to the derby with Djurgården requiring a victory. Hammarby came out pumped and took an early 2 goal lead. Djurgården woke up after the early shock and got an equaliser a few minutes equaliser. Then at the start of the 2nd half former Mjällby defender Ståhl equalised for Djurgården. Hammarby made an attacking switch straight away and briught on Madjed. The substitute made an instant impact and scored a vital goal. The game continued in a frenzied tempo but just as it seemed Hammarby would claim a a vital win and bragging right former Mjällby player Ståhl stepped up again and bundled home an equaliser.

7 matches left and Mjällby are 10 points ahead with an easier schedule. Time for the bookies to pay out?

In the other matches the most notable things are IFK Göteborg’s rise up the table. The won the derby against Häcken and our now right in the mix for a European spot.

AIK got a vital win against Brommapojkarna to stay in front for the Eurpea spot. They had to push hard and got a late winner from 16 year oldkevin Filling. An interesting player to watch for the future.

The end is near. The storm was brewing over the weekend but Amy was not going to stop the top 2 teams.

Mjällby had one of their best performances of the year against Elfsborg even though they missed their captain for this contest.

Hammarby was like an old boxer on their knee almost feeling the end was near. Yet they mustered strength in an incredibly difficult away match at IFK Göteborg. They got the energy from Göteborg old boy Abraham.

At the bottom of the table we saw some exceptional performances

Sirus handed out a hiding to Malmö

Bottom club Värnamo got a great win away to AIK

Well I am speechless we have a new league champiin. This is the biggest upset I have witnessed in my life time. A village with a population of around 1500 has produced a team that has defied the odds.

It is not just the fact that they won the league like for exmaple Leicester. It is the fact that this might be the best league campaign by a team ever in Sweden. They currently have 66 points and only need one more pojnt to match the best pojnts haul in league history. They still have 3 matches to play. They have lost once all season an unlucky loss away to AIK. The rest of the season they have been imperious, brave, solid, tough whilst playing free flowing football.

Congratulations Mjällby

I've been following this story for a while on The Sweeper. Remarkable stuff.

Here is are matches of the weekend and Mjällby’s title decider on the monday

Hammarby played really well in the derby against AIK. In a normal season they would probably have secured enough points to win the league. This season it is enough for a spot in Europe

GAIS took control of the final European spot with a great performance at home to Djurgården. This has been terrific season from the mackerels.

That said on talksport this morning this is akin to Leicester winning the 15/16 PL. I’d say it’s more like Oxford United or something like that.
