Liverpool and Real Madrid are just £2.5million apart as they go into the final stretch of negotiations over Xabi Alonso's move to the Bernabeu.

Talks will take place over the weekend with Monday set as the deadline for a deal to be struck.

Liverpool have dropped their price considerably since the start of the summer and are reluctant to go much under £30m.

Following Alonso's decision to hand in a written transfer request, a compromise figure around £28m could be reached, but Liverpool will point to interest from Italy and other English clubs.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Option: Real Madrid may offer Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to Liverpool

Chelsea and Manchester City both enquired about the Spain midfielder in May, but were told he is not for sale. Stamford Bridge boss Carlo Ancelotti remains keen if the price is right, but is also in talks to sign Andrea Pirlo from AC Milan.

I'd love it to be true, but I just think it's a convenient story for the press to run. Chelsea don't need him, and Lampard and Alonso hate each other anyway. And City have loads of money so we're likely to be linked with players like Alonso when they are available. I don't know where Alonso would fit in if we did get him, but it'd be a great problem to have, he's one of the best passers in the premiership. Unfortunately I just think it's a matter of time before Madrid and Liverpool do agree a fee.

What exactly do you think he will add that we don't already have?
I don't think we need him.
The fat spanish waiter wanted Barry to replace him, now we have Barry.

Don't think he'd come. Obviously wants Madrid move so do we really want him? Also where would he play? He is a mid-midfielder, doesn't sit deep nor far forward. We have Barry in that position, hardly going to drop him. An excellent player but too many cooks, it'd just be a case of buying for the sake of it.

and gerrards missus wants to move somewhere less rough,a double swoop maybe!

Never gonna happen, though I said that when there were rumours of Schumi returning to F1 so you never know!

that leads me to believe interest in him may be reignited by city
