ssn showed the incidents this morning. both blatantly time wasted, alonso running backwards & forwards & generally dicking around when taking a free kick & ramos pulling his socks up, standing around & showing no sign of being about to take a goal kick.

beckham did likewise a few years ago, deliberately getting a yellow against wales for needlessly flattening robbie savage so he'd be suspended for england's unimportant next game & keeping him clear for the more important following game.

Pretty sure it was Thatcher not Savage was it not?

For me this kind of thing is worse than players diving or feigning injury, it's cynicism at its worst. If UEFA have an offence along the lines of "bringing the game into disrepute" these two need charging and add 2 more matches onto the ban so they miss both legs of the knockout round.

I agree that the disciplinary system that encourages it needs sorting out too.

This is nowhere near as bad as diving. Diving is deliberately trying to deceive the referee, that is cheating.
This is just exploiting rules to your advantage. Similar to the Suarez incident at the World Cup.

UEFA can not punish Real Madrid officially.
but there are many other ways.
there is always a Ovrebo like to use.
Real Madrid last night threw away his chances of winning the CL.

It's not the first time it's been done, although most of the time its not so blatant. Dont see a problem with it. Imagine that you'd previously picked up a yellow for a 'nothing' challenge and your next yellow would mean you'd miss a knockout game....why wouldn't you take advantage of the law ? Ref's are too quick to get their cards out these days anyway.

They could have tried to hide it by making a rash challenge on a player, but why risk injuring someone when you can get a yellow card by time wasting.
The slate should be wiped clean after the group stage anyway.

Why should the slate be wiped clean? If they've been booked it's nobody else's fault except the player himself. The referee makes the decision on the pitch and that's what's wrong, too many people in studios picking referees performances to pieces. They call it as they see it, you and I don't always agree with it but it's not going to change anytime soon. So if they've accumulated a few bookings and risk the chance to miss a game in the knockout stages, tough shit, they shouldn't have got booked in the first place.

.. so then if Ramos had played Auxierre and received a yellow he'd then be suspended from the knock-out stage due to an accumulated total of two yellow cards? This is what confuses me about the alleged tactic of getting the yellow out of the way by getting a second booking for time-wasting
