THINGS THAT GET THROWN AT US
We’ve got no fans… well we don’t have as many as some, and as far as I can see that’s mainly because they were successful at a time when football became more global and money entered the game on a massive scale.
We have no history… everything is history, not just trophies. Everyone has a story, League 2 was part of ours, and our story does include trophies, some that we won before they had any themselves, but a reason why we don’t have as many as some is the same as the above.
It’s just oil money… to compete properly at the top, we had to spend big, we had to spend more than we have and more than we generate. We’ve probably broken some rules along the way, as well as being clever about it, but I don’t care that we’ve broken rules that are there partly to keep the status quo.
IN THE NAME OF COMPETING
We need to generate as much money as possible to compete, and the ownership will find ways to top it us as best they can. But part of needing to be bigger means we’ve had to change as a club, we’ve had to get more money in.
I was at Wembley for the FA CUP semi-final, we were very quiet and I didn’t like it. The attendance was 73,000 and the empty seats were on our side. Behind the goal tried a bit, but otherwise it was pretty dead.
I wasn’t at the old Wembley in 99 when the attendance was 76,000 but I know which I would rather be at, I know the City fans on each occasion were very different and I know who I’d rather go to watch my team with.
WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER WIN?
We’ve all been asked this a lot in recent weeks - EPL or UCL? And I used to say the League. But last week I decided that I don’t actually care. It got to a point where I just wanted us to stop them getting all 4 but I don’t even care about that now. Even if we win the league, the national conversation will be about how close they were to all 4, how good they are, what history they have, how pure their fans are. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
And I really don’t care. They are unbearable. Worse than the other lot ever were.
WHO’S UP FOR THE PLAY OFFS?
I’m glad we did it. I’m glad we upset it for a bit, I enjoyed getting Tevez, I went mental at 93:20 and Kompany of course and plenty more along the way, but right now, I think I’m happy to get off the ride. I’d rather we now accepted our fan base is local and loyal and blue to the bone, was there in League 2 and are still there today - but we don’t need loads of others if it changes who we are.
Changing our club to try and compete with national treasures, amidst that constant, nationwide conversation, just isn’t worth it. I’d rather be somewhere between Notts Forest and Leicester. Competing for Europe one season, fighting off relegation a few seasons later, going down, and battling to come back up. But doing it all as one blue family. I miss it. I wish that that my son’s don’t see that City.
It almost feels like that’s where we should be. It’s rubbish of course, because like I said earlier, the ‘big’ teams are only where they are because they were there when it went global, and money came in, securing their position forever. But I’d rather we had our soul than lost it to win trophies.
But I’ll still be gutted if we don’t get Haaland. Come back and ask me in 12 months.
