So here's a question for you. If you really believed that the US was going to turn fascist and you have a LGBT kid, what the fuck are you still doing in the US? Waiting around to be shot? Because if I believed that the UK was going to go full on dictatorial fascism and I had a kid that would be targeted by this then I'd be out of that country in about 16 seconds flat.

But that would be fleeing your country because of fear of persecution because of sexual identity and would make him and his family asylum seekers.

As we know the UK is closing its doors to asylum seekers.

Even if the mid terms go ahead, blue states will be occupied by Trump’s troops, official and otherwise, who will do everything to prevent voters from exercising their franchise. Not white enough? You are on ICE until the ballot is closed.

In my job I interview people from all around the world and I've spoken to over a dozen in the last six months who are actively looking to leave America because they or their partners or children are from a minority group.

In the real world you are talking about you can't relocate an entire family abroad in 16 seconds flat. It's a touch more complicated than that.
 
I imagine the journey will be complete when he comes in for a third term and then that third term becomes permanent.

You’d figure someone as skilled in technology and as mind-numbingly pedantic as you would understand the meaning of a smiley-face at the end of a post, but I guess I should have known better.

And in answer to your question, a) you’d figure someone as smart as you would be aware of complications around escape; b) my kids are already adults; c) I’d certainly not post any plans publicly; d) how do you know I’m not?; and e) my friends think I am an absolute loon for hedging my bets the way that I am.

Trump was duly elected, as was every member of Congress. The courts are working, albeit with the government playing games you wouldn't expect. State and local governments are functioning. It's idiotic and infuriating but not fascism.

Democratic backsliding, yes. Not for the first time over here or in the UK. It wasn't that long ago UK citizens were being interned, tortured, killed in the streets of NI by elements of the British government. The US has interned people of Japanese descent, brutalized minorities, denied various outgroups their basic rights, etc. Corruption in various institutions has been endemic.

A democratic republic is always going to require action to restrain the power of government. It's unfortunate we have this problem in our lifetime, but I don't think we should in any way accede to the idea this is a fascist country.
