Try the Winston, walking distance from central Station. Only problem is it is on the edge of the red light district and I know you won't want to be near there!!!!
But it is clean, cheap and cheerful with a music bar attached. me and mates have stayed there a few times.

I'll 2nd this. stayed here about 7 times over the last few yrs, most hotels are very basic in Amsterdam as is the winston, but the winston is quite central to most things, the back of the hotel backs right onto the red light area,but if you bat for the other side theres the cock ring cinema across the road.

I've stayed in The Rho which is just off Amsterdam Square. Reasonable, comfy and the ladies who cleaned up my mate's sick after mushrooms were OK with us.
