1. Ray Wilkins wanted more than the board thought he deserved from his contract. In short he got greedy and left.
2. Ancelotti's father died in Italy this year which no doubt upset him. That happened around the time Chelsea's form started to decline. I suspect he felt guilty that he was in England when this happened.
3. This was Chelsea's least successful season since Abramovich's take over.
4. The same out of form players were selected over better performing youth and bench warmers.
5. He never stuck with a playing style or formation which lead to very erratic performances.
I really like Ancelotti. You'll never meet a nicer man and he's a decent manager to boot. But at the height of professional football you can't have a season that bad and keep your job. Its just a fact of the business (unless you're Ferguson or Wenger).
