And now Blockbuster goes Bust

Blockbuster have only got themselves to blame, they have had massive debts for over 15
years now and have been run on the lines of manure. About 15 years ago the film companies brought out "dual pricing", films could be bought in HMV, TESCO, ASDA etc for £8 - £10 but a rental copy for the video/dvd shops could cost up to £40 per copy. The reason was the film companies decided video shops were getting on going rental monies and they wanted a bigger slice of this, they did not take into account that some films bombed and the shops had to cover this and also things like films being damaged, not returned, staff wages etc. Most of the big chains, AZAD, RITZ, HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS etc fought against this but BBUSTER did deals with said film companies to the detriment of the other chains. Its because of these prices that rental films are £3 - £4 per night for new releases and why the rental shop is now becoming a thing of the past.

The odd thing with all this is that when I left school video hire was supposed to be the death of the cinema. <br />How times change.

But the cinema raised its standards and made it an experience to visit. What do you get from visiting Blockbuster, Jessops etc that you can't get online

I think 3D films have helped, but christ its so expensive watching the latest film.

Problem with buying is you suddenly find yourself with a house full of films that you will never watch again and having to take them to the local charity shop

The highstreet as we know it is disappearing.
Mothercare not doing too well now, there will be nothing left on the highstreet at this rate, in 10 years everything will be online, Market St will be a huge Pound shop

i think you are right. my shop is not really internet friendly, we need humans to measure and fit carpets. what does happen though is the radio/phone shop, the florist and even the jewelers will all be gone soon as people stay at home and order from their armchair. this means people just wont visit our town centre, i could be giving carpets away but there will nobody around to see them. thank goodness for the loyal customer base i have, but i fear i will struggle as "new blood" gets thinner on the ground.

this sadly is happening everywhere, we had a tesco express built near us a couple of years age, so far two ironmongers,an independent supermarket and a butchers have all closed down, nobody wanted tesco and there were protests at the time but to no effect. Soon there will be one, tesco/asda/lidl, where there used to be ten individual shops, unemployment will rise yet again and village life will disappear, what a great way to live

That sounds a good idea but you can bet De Niro has cut his carpet prices down to the bare bones already to try to boost trade.

Iknow lads who run a carpet shop in Droylsden and they are worried, they are not struggling but have definately seen a downturn lately
