I wish our "highstreet" in burnage would disappear. Overflowing dustbins, dogshit, boarded up shops and shitty takeaways.

30 years ago it ws full of people with pride in their establishments. Clean outside, planted baskets etc etc. what the fuck happened? sad.

Not that bad i hear where i was brought up but all the shops are now all soulless wine bars.
There was a sweet shop and the couple who ran it looked better dressed than kings and queens i thought, bow tie, starched shirt and that.
He called you master or young sir and it made you feel important.

Everyone of the local shops for local people have gone, it does make me think if all this online stuff maybe needs self moderation.

I know for a fact Mrs TCIB loves to go round shops as does my poor mortally wounded wallet, she always has a moan at me for getting stuff of debenhams.com or tesco.com.

Maybe in the future a few start to make a come back.

My local shops had a bloody aquarium and general petshop, i can't remember the last time i saw a pet shop now :<

Burnage Lane was a bustling community 25yrs ago. A couple of newsagents, an ice cream shop, green grocers, shoe shop, Coop store with a school uniform section, florist, 1 general store (called Pinkys), a barbers, a hairdressers and a Post Office and a small store called Liptons.

All gone to be replaced by a couple of dirty food shops who the environmental health have on their books, a couple of takeaways - likewise and the coop still there. its just all dirty and unkempt.

No english shopkeepers left either.

Only ever went in Blockbusters once and that was when they first opened a branch in my home town. After filling in a form and showing them 3 different types of ID they let me join, only to tell me I couldn't rent the latest films until I'd rented a load of old shit ones first to prove I wasn't a scrote.
Never went back in after that.

Remember when the CO-OP had that whole building except for Johns Hardware store in the middle. Clothes shop on one side (now the bookies and 2 empty units) and the CO-OP Superstore on the other side was a proper supermarket not a convenience store like it is now.

Over the road started with a shoe shop, had a greengrocer in the middle (with bubblegum machines outside) and a launderette at the end.

Can't remember Pinkies though. Where was that?

If I remember right Blockbusters had the chance to buy netflix or at least own a massive stake in them for $50million, but they turned them down because they didn't see it as worth investing. It's what you get for not investing in the future, I have no sympathy for the likes of HMV, Woolworths and Blockbusters because they went out of business for a reason, that being the cost of service was much too great.

Getting back on topic, as a few people have already said Blockbuster going bump is not really a surprise. Thinking about it tonight, personally I've probably not been in one since the last century. Just another example of a company getting big doing one thing and then failing to adapt as the world changes around them.

I've worked in businesses that have been taken over or been on their arses and weeks away from going bump and I've also been there when the shares are going through the roof and no one can do no wrong. That's the point where the people running the business should be planning 5/10 years ahead as a minimum. SWAT, Succession etc.

This guys wrote 3 important books IMHO. Good to Great, How the Mighty Fall and Built to Last.
