Seems fairly clear non of our midfield targets are available, best we can hope for is a loan, so this deal makes no difference to that. It does fill another positition that needs filling and improves us.

I think people underestimate how badly the slow back line has hampered midfield. Khusanov is the Walker replacement, he’s fast and physical which allows him to cover the 40 yards between defenders and keeper when teams play balls over the top.

Once we have that pace in the back line, we can push up more and make the midfield smaller, which has always been how we dominated it. Rodri is not a speedy Kante/Fernandinho style defensive mid, he’d also be struggling with how the back line has been this season. Bernardo hasn’t got a suddenly slower this season, he’s just covering more space.

IMO we’ll see basically the old Otamendi-Stones-Walker behind Zinchenko-Rodri defensive set up but flipped, so Gvardiol-Khusanov-Stones with Cambiaso next to the defensive midfielder.
