Andy Burnham | Manchester Mayor

Is Burnham liked by the Manchester public?
If there were a ballot today just between two Labour candidates for Manchester mayor, Burnham vs a competent other, would Burnham win?
If someone could set up a poll on a new thread I'd appreciate it
Many Labour voters in Manchester loathe Andy Burnham along with his PR team of Rayner and the hard left.

Burnham would win comfortably, he has his critics for sure but Manchester on a whole is doing a hell of a lot better than a lot of other places at the moment. One of the only cities in the country significantly growing economically, outperforming London as it is.

My criticism would be that I think it's at the expense of the poorer people in the City but that seems to be the theme in the western world unfortunately.

The transportation improvements are a significant plus for his achievements. Cheaper and improved tenfold.

If wants to be an Mp can’t he Resign as Mayor?
Party politics is stopping him
He has his supporters in the party and also his critics who are saying he's being disloyal to the Labour Party, Starmer and the Manchester Public
His critics also raise the point that if he resigns, then it is they who have to fund the Manchester mayor by election

He wants to be a Labour MP; they won't let him stand as one. He can stand as an independent, sure, but he wants to remain a member of the party.

Nobody is perfect but overall I think he’s done far more good than bad.

Obviously the idiots who slag him off for things completely out of his control, and who are incapable of understanding the difference between the council and the GMCA, tend to shout the loudest.

The Bee Network public transport integration had a few teething problems but nobody can deny it’s been overall a big success.

I'm no lover of him and now living outside Greater Manchester have no idea how good/bad public transport is other than from seeing the queues after games and the complaints of getting away from said games.

What I will say is and bareing in mind the failed Tory's jumping ship to keep a quid coming in, resign the mayoral position and put some pressure on rather than keep a foot in the gravy train.

Labour Party rulebook:

Combined or Single Authority Mayors and Police and Crime
Commissioners must seek the express permission of the NEC/SEC/WEC (as
applicable) before seeking nomination as Labour candidates for the Westminster
Parliament. The NEC/SEC/WEC’s decision shall be final

Was it wise for Burnham to go for it (knowing the make up of the committee that would make the decision)? Was it wise for the committee to make the decision? There was no pain-free answer (for Burnham or the party).

There will be other good candidates for the vacant seat.

The reality is that the left of Labour have tried to over-throw the right, and given no fucks to how the electorate would accept this. Would Burnham have got Labour into government, I’m not sure as he squared himself away for the mayoral role.

This is what interests me about Labour politics, when will they implode and give the right their vote. And we all know now that they’re prepared to give them their vote rather than looking after themselves and their ‘so called’ comrades.

This is why it’s hard to vote for Labour, you know that the RW media will pull every trick to bring them down, and their voters will just fall apart when they’re offered the absolute minimum.

Nothing’s changed, people need to enjoy their misery.

If anything, the left of Labour has been overthrown by the right. Burnham is only left in relation to Starmer.

Burnham and Rayner, the hard left??

Lift up thine eyes to the hills my friends. Burnham is happy to be backed by the big unions' charioteer Angela of Adswood.
You do know some the Marxists running UNISON, UNITE, NEU, PCS etc have been expelled from the Labour Party?

Burnham is a brainless, talentless blister. He was told he would be blocked but went ahead anyway to give his hard left backers a chance to target Starmer. He also knew that a mayoral election would likely result in Reform winning giving them a 4 year term and control over £millions of regional spending but went ahead anyway. The choice between GM vs Denton/Gorton falling to Farage is a pretty easy one to make for someone with a shred of integrity.
