The results are unimportant, it's about producing players. We have been producing players for the Championship & Jim did no better than the current bloke.

We didn't produce one single player good enough to get in this current team, in all the years he was there, apart from Micah Richards. The nearest (SWP) we signed from Forest.

Before the academy was set up, people like Ken Barnes & those before him used to somehow find top class players from Manchester.

Where these academy guy's reputation for excellence has come from, I've no idea. It has failed completely.
We always had good local talent playing for the club when we were a top side in the 60's and 70's and also when we weren't so good in the 80's we got promoted and got ourselves up to 5th in the Prem by the early 90's with a good youth team coming through. Since then we've produced Championship standard players as a rule.

Three players who have played a big part in City's first team in recent years are Shaun Wright-Phillips, Micah Richards and Joe Hart and all of them came from other Academies (Forest, Oldham and Shrwesbury) before they came to us.

2.6million live in the Manchester Metropolitan area, 6.2million live in the North West. Phil Jagielka is from Brooklands and he came through at Sheff Utd. Players don't have to come from here to come through our system but it is nice to see a local hero in a City shirt and that goers for fans of all clubs all over the world.

Good post mate-When you look at what the likes of Guy Roux achieved-city have underachieved ove rthe last 20 years in recruiting and developing local talent. On the positive side the current under 15s in terms of individuals and style of play look a though things may take a turn for the better.

Or these boys at under 12? http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/news/coaches-praise-premier-league-futsal-finals.html
Dont know if it was postd at the time. I dont remeber seeing much about it but it sounds like a looooong overdue change of style for us and England. Wonder who's initiative this was? I mean apart from Gareth Whalley.

What about Danny Sturridge ??

Top draw for me..............
Wasn't Sturridge from Coventry???

The flaw with this whole "It's the win at all cost mentality killing english football", is that you don't often play very well and not win.

In terms of developing young players I would disagree with you.The Ajax/Barca model where the future is the most important consideration; they try to push the better younger players to play above their natural age group.

They may find it difficult at first but learn more.If the team loses -so be it-the kids learn more and they will develop quicker.City now have a deliberate policy of promoting kids above their natural age when they are ready for the next challenge.

In a different era the likes of Alan Hudson and Trevor Brooking developed by playing in the street against older kids-they needed to make decisions quicker or they would have been taken out by the bigger lads. What Ajax ,Barca and hopefully City are doing is based on the same principles in the modern era.

But Barcelona supposedly have this "performance not winning" mentality. Yet the Barca academy, guess what? wins!

That's because they have been allowed to develop at their own pace, make mistakes and learn from them. They win from 16 because winning was not the be all and end all for the previous 8 years.

Marwood is criticised by some on here, but I'd be surprised if he were fired given that he was singled out for particular and quite fulsome praise in Khaldoon's post-season official site interview.Don't see Khaldoon saying what he did if Marwood's position was under threat.

Interesting that Lombardo is going to coach the EDS now. Maybe a battle won by Mancini, getting his man in there rather than someone appointed without his input?

There is, of course, still a vacancy at Technical Director as well given the departure of Mike Rigg, which was announced before the end of the season. Lele Oriali, who had that role at Inter when Mancini was there, was linked to us a while back after Mancini commented positively about him in the media. Wonder if he might be a candidate.

Also, wasn't Welsh was the senior football person at the Academy as well as coaching the EDS? Mark Allen, nominally the Head of the Academy, was recruited as the club's head of HR and is more an administrator, I think. So presumably there'll be a new recruit alongside him, specialising in youth coaching.

Scott Sellars is the football director of the academy - his coaching sessions are first class.

The academy is improving all the time and from what I have seen the emphasis is now all about technique and not about winning at all cost. I have seen the size profile at younger levels has definatley begin to change and its not just land of the giants any more. If the players are good enough they are played up an age group or on some occasions the whole team will play up a level.

The lads play some great passing football and are all comfortable on the ball. In my opinion we are going the right way about securing our future. The problem is the gap between the u15s and current EDS.

These thing take time ..

All I will say then is I look forward to us doing shit in the Next Gen etc... this year again as that will probably mean they are playing well

Watching the U15s was a breath of fresh air. I don't have the ability to tell if a player at that age will turn into a world beater, so can't judge individuals, but I could see that they seem to know how to pass & move better than the 20 year olds who our academy has been spewing out over the past few decades.

Yes the U15s resembled a mini-Spain, it was really eye-opening and suggested that we are getting it right at the younger levels. EDS/reserves seems to be the problem, there is no sign of it being an effective developmental setup let alone a gateway to the first team. A new coach who knows what he's doing plus the imminent U21 Premier League would help a lot.

Get f*ckin in !!!!!! Thank f*ck for that!!

This has really made my day I am so glad that this clown has finally been given what we deserved I've not be as happy as this since we got rid of Hughes.<br /><br />-- Mon Jul 09, 2012 7:11 pm --<br /><br />

Welsh came after Hughes so it had nothing to with him. Any news on the U21 reserve league?
Wonder what the club will do if that isn't ready for this season, surely they cant have a repeat of last year.

reserves were shite last year. hardly surprising he was sacked

Didnt they win the league last season?

they dont even play in it, and as the above poster said, they were shocking in the youth champions league aswell

Shocking was being generous we were appalling an embarrassment to a club which had prided itself with its steaped tradition of bringing through its youth players.<br /><br />-- Mon Jul 09, 2012 7:26 pm --<br /><br />

This is one of the best moves of the summer the club could have made, a step forward for our developmental system and hopefully we can get the reserves back into shape now.

This 100%. I fist pumped when I heard the news.

If Lombardo is taking over, you'd think some of the kids would be happy.

Welsh to Mancini: "Give this kid a chance."

Cassell didn't have the likes of Messi, Iniesta, Xavi to work with, what he did with the players he had is nothing short of remarkable. Winning the FA Youth is no mean feat considering the situation we were in at the time.

What Jim did is bring through good honest players the likes of Barton, SWP, Ireland, Micah, Nedum of recent times verfiy that.
