Is he the reason for our defensive failings this season????

I've heard he can't speak English and needs a translator.

Manchester City have brought in Italian coach Angelo Gregucci as a specialist defensive coach.

The 49-year-old was Roberto Mancini’s assistant in his first management job at Fiorentina, and also played with the City boss during his days at Lazio.

Gregucci has been coach at 10 clubs in the top three Italian divisions in 14 years. His latest post was with Serie B side Reggina, where he was sacked in April after three months in charge.

Gregucci said Mancini was the key factor in bringing him to Manchester, saying: “He is the reason I came here. I have been his assistant and am a long-time friend so I jumped at the opportunity.”

The old adage goes 'If its not broken don't fix it.' Quite simply this must be followed.

We have suffered injuries and have unfamiliar line ups so I wont look into it too much but what I will say is the Zonal aspect of it is screwing us over. In the league and last night, set piece you should mark your man and stick with him. Zonal is horseshit and a curse on the club. Get it gone asap.

Jobs for the boys. Just like it was jobs for the boyos under Hughes. And that didn't work either.

Was zonal shit for the last 2 and a half seasons too?

Stop using the system to excuse individuals that are not doing their job properly.

The same zonal shit as the last 2 seasons

The guy has clearly had no positive impact on the team whatsoever so is basically being paid to do nothing productive at the moment. A defensive coach's first job should be the fundamentals... such as marking the man at the front post. Why hire a coach who can't speak any English? Communication must be very important in explaining tactics.

The players are big enough and ugly enough to know the fundamentals. They shouldn't need anyone telling them that, no matter what language he says it in.

In the OP it said he had been brought in as a defensive coach. Who exactly said that? Mancini , in an interview said he hadn't been doing any defensive coaching.

Seems some fans will believe anything!

Re the goals against/Zonal issue.

In Prem games last season we let in 29 in 38 games ave 0.76

This season we've let in 9 in 10 games ave 0.9.

There's not a great deal of difference. Don't believe the media crap that zonal doesn't work in England.

The real issue is that in Europe we get battered with this system especially from corners so should go man to man.

Last season CL & UEFA games 12 in 10 games ave 1.2

This season CL only 9 in 4 games ave 2.25

No team can ship goals like that and win.

Was Yaya not supposed to be marking De Jong? He's in his zone so should he not ensure he doesn't get a run on him?

For the first goal, it looked like Moisander got a run on Clichy, is that because of zonal marking?

Sack the twat asap .... he is fuckin useless !

Best defence in England and not far off the best in Europe before he turned up !

Don't know where is the problem but it's kinda embarrassing that only Dinamo Zagreb leaked more goals than us in CL so far.

Is that true ? Wow ... that's scary when you consider we haven't even played Madrid or Dortmund for a second time yet.

If you read the Training Reports on here it appears that Mancini takes charge of all of the tactical and positional work. In fact I often wonder what the assistant coaches do.

Not any defensive failing just Zonal Marking.

when was the last time Zonal scored??

Mark a player, attack the ball not aload of space!!

Managers these days trying to over complicate the game come on!

yep, from 16 teams that already played 4 games, only Zagreb conceded one goal more than us. Obviously other 16 too but some of them could reach our low if they concede 2-3 tonight.

FFS not this again. Mancini has said that Gregucci does not do any first team couching. He is more of a scout

Zonal marking on average is more efficient and effective when compared to man marking, some coaches will play the percentages game and zonal marking has a higher success rate than picking up man a corners, this is a fact

-- Wed Nov 07, 2012 7:31 pm --

You can't get any simpler than zonal marking I'm afraid, you set up the same no matter the opposition and it is easier to work on in training, complicated I think not
