Anna Connell

Was in Darlaston the other day and recalled reading this thread with great interest so I did some digging (not literally) about as to Anna's final resting place.

After asking about I was given the details of the Walsall Local History Centre, which covers Darlaston. I contacted them, gave them all the info I have (which all comes from this thread by the way, and thank you all for it) and they phoned me back an hour ago.

There is no record of Anna being buried in the municipal graveyard (James Bridge Cemetry). However, they informed me that Rev John Dixon was rector of St Lawrences in Darlaston between 1913 and 1924 (the year of Anna's death).

Assuming that her brother-in-law would have had a big part to play in her funeral I contacted Lichfield Diocese, with a view to approaching St Lawrences directly, and they have given me the details of their archivist (a Mrs Mithra Tonking, [great name]). I have just e-mailed her with a request to find out as much info as possible on Rev John Dixon that relates to Anna.

Will update you as soon as she replies (assuming she does)

So if I've got this right, Anna Connell set up a football club to stop the locals kicking seven bells out of each other. And from then, we spent most of the time up to the 1980's kicking seven bells out of each other at football matches. Still, it's the thought that counts.

No no no PB, it was about more than just the gang violence, there was the heavy drinking and (i am sure i have read somewhere) the gambling too.

Hmmmm

I could also have heard somewhere that she was from close to the Bangor (North Down) area, but maybe that is the place where her father was a rector before moving to Gorton.

She was from Clones (wiki 'a small town in western County Monaghan, in the border area of Ireland') according to census info

Yes, didn't they call him "The Clones Cyclone"?

Btw, fascinating thread. I missed it back in February so glad it got revived today and I could read it.

Excellent work, mate. You should contact Gary James to see/share any info which he may have on the subject. I am amazed that James hasn't found her grave by now. He comes on here from time to time and I'm sure he has read this thread - so, Gary, how about it?
