Was this the pay matchday service mentioned by City in previous surveys?

Cisco brings high density Wi-Fi to Manchester City

on 25 April 2014.

Cisco has deployed hundreds of microcells in Manchester City's Etihad Stadium to bring high capacity Wi-Fi to more than 47,000 fans.

The High Density Wi-Fi network will be deployed at the Premier League team's stadium in the coming weeks and has been delivered by O2. The network offloads 3G and 4G data usage onto Wi-Fi and uses highly directional antennas in order to deal with booming data usage. The solution also delivers management of RF power levels and channel assignments across hundreds of access points. O2 will also roll out technology to improve mobile reception despite the high demand in a small area.

Manchester City will use the technology to deliver live video and relevant information to users' mobile devices in a short amount of time. The football club could also potentially offer a range of channels including replays, alternate angles and dynamic data.

The deal means Manchester City is the first Premier League team to roll out the service. Cisco has deployed the solution elsewhere in Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu and the Brooklyn Nets Barclays Center.

Paul Lawton, General Manager of SMB at O2, said: "We are delighted to be working with Manchester City and Cisco to deliver a UK first in the form of High Density Wi-Fi at the Etihad. The underpinning ICT delivery is something we are really excited to be working on, and will result in the provision of high-speed connection anywhere in the stadium for fans, allowing them to capture and share their experience in a digital way – something we are passionate about as a business."

Fuck me, have we signed him????

...and if so, why's he bringing his own wifi with him?

As nice as it is to be able to tweet and check other scores at half time, I can't say I'll be too busy watching replays and stuff on my phone WHILST THERE'S A MATCH GOING ON

I'm sure it'll improve the atmosphere no end, everyone looking at phones and tablets instead of the game, we could have done with this when Pearce was manager, it would have given us the chance to see what a goal looked like.......

I can see it now.

Instead of throwing coins and broken seats, City fans will throw iPads, Tablets, Mobile Phones, and any portable device they can take into the Etihad.

"Come and have a watch if you think your hard enough!"

Has it really come to this? Really? Utter, inane, mindless drivel. Go to the match, watch the match. Go home. If you need/want to watch replays on your phone, tweet, text, wank yourself into a technological stupor - do it at home. On your Ipad or whatever piece of fucking gadgetery folk feel the need to use these days. There is no place for this at the match. Ever.

It has sadly, though I suspect you're part of the silent majority. If I can send the odd text to mates who can't be there I'll be happy, replays are on the big screen if you're bothered, and while we are playing, I couldn't give a toss what any other team is doing, not even the latest score.

How did we cope before mobiles? Easily. The two lads I sit with know that texting is 100% not allowed - mobiles switched off at kick off. If folk can't be there, tune into the radio. I know we live in a 24hr instant messaging world, but one of the joys at match time is that feeling of being totally and utterly disconnected from home/work/anywhere but the match. All the utter bollocks now that follows a goal - the FIFA stuff; the scrambling to watch a replay. Just watch the game; enjoy it for what you can see. I'd rather stand in an open terrace and be dazzled by the skills on the pitch than sit in a comfy chair surrounded by endless replays. Guess it comes with the territory of the world we inhabit but for me, technology has one place: a rocket.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I genuinely just don't get how you'd want to do anything but sit, watch, chat to your mates at the match.

No you're not in the minority, I do send the odd text I'll admit that, but its no more than a couple a game, usually at half time or after an important moment, but I see people with Ipads and tablets, and they spend as much time on them as they do watching the match, which is mind boggling to me, never would I take either to a game.

I think it's part of the instant culture. It's hard to remember the days when texting was something that you maybe did once in a blue moon (like my dad - two texts from him in ten years of him having a mobile - which is two more than the calls he's ever made on it!) I'm guilty of texting rubbish - stuff I'd normally have saved 'til meeting up for a pint in the dim and distant past. But match day is sacrosanct - my mum; the missus, our kid' everyone knows - you'll get nothing from me when the boys are playing. But here I sit, reading a forum. Physician heal thyself!

We are part of the silent crew, we sing at the matches but we don't film, text, iPad et al. I go to watch the match, encourage the team, shout at the referee, linesman and the opposition if they need it , talk to the folk around me at half time and applaud the team off at the end. A dying breed unfortunately. :-)
