Just in case anyone was doubting that the growing calls for an extension is entirely Remainer driven and intended for the EU's benefit - along comes that call for an extension from someone that should remove any doubt.

The desire for an extension is to provide the EU the opportunity to play their repetitive game of replacing the light at the end of the tunnel - with more tunnel.
For UK Remainers the hope is fairly transparent. They are dismayed that a government committed to Brexit will have 4 years to go after we have left and then by the time of the next GE the departure from the EU will have become recognised to have been a good thing - at least certainly not the series of cataclysms that the Remainers have prophesised/promised.
What they are really hoping for, IMO, is that the departure date can be extended by an initial 2 years - that will allow a further campaign to be undertaken to lead to further extensions. Hopefully, in their minds, we will still be in the EU by the time of the next GE and that could bring them another chance to stop Brexit altogether.
I expect that some of the arch-Remainers, whilst recognising that the pandemic is a tragic event, see the silver lining as being the opportunity to eat away a good chunk of the 4 years until the next GE
As I say, transparent - but such a tactic is the well-established MO of the EU - and the government need the resolve to recognise it for what it is and ignore it.
