Not what Gove said on TV this morning .... he said a Hard Brexit was still on the table.... and Johnson is to legislate to prevent MPs extending the Brexit transition period beyond 2020.

Being the professional dickhead that he is, Gove has to say that. For my money, given Johnson's narcissism will mean he won't go full hard Brexit when he knows that most of us would know take some form of soft brexit now, so he can portray himself as the guy who both delivered brexit and avoided the cliff edge.

Yes, I'd be in the "wary" category, when it comes to border polls under these circumstances.
I had thought it would take another generation of cross border business, cooperation, integration of cultures, before even contemplating it.
Even at that I don't know what I thought an outcome would look like.
Some kind of duel nationality, I think, but that's out the window with Brexit.

Duel nationality? Foster vs Johnson? Balloons and blunderbuses as weapons?

I unfortunately agree with you AWG.
I have this awful fear that when you are cast aside by the UK, it will be without a plan and an unholy mess could be left behind.

You suggesting that the UK government would enact something without thinking about the consequences? Shocking!
Of course, you won't be UK voters after that, and therefore can be ignored.

That will include ERG mps too, hopefully it's them he's targetting. A hard Brexit will mean the end of his grand spending plans and probably an end to the UK.

I'm very very happy for you to continue with the delusion that it was. And thereby guaranteeing a Tory victory in the 2024 general election. Not that it isn't guaranteed anyway. No party has ever in the history of our Parliament, gained 120+ seats in one GE so you are fucked any which way. Shame.

In fairness a lot of those seats are one offs. Labour without brexit would be around 250 ish. It's certainly possible they could get a hung parliament next time. If they wake the fuck up.

Reading the doom & gloom of diehard Remainers who sound as if they will be desperately hoping for things to go wrong so they can indulge in "I told you so!!!" - 2 things come to mind:

1. Given the election result and the size of the majority - would their lives be less bitter/miserable if they allowed themselves to somewhat 'move on'? There is no Gina Miller, Dominic Grieve saviour that might emerge to save them - the people spoke in 2016 - and to prove the deniers wrong they have done so again in spades. So FFS - do try to start getting over it for your own sakes.

2. All these benefits they are now inventing strikes me as the 2019/2020 attempt to build a false argument that they can defend in the years to come because those sunlit uplands benefits have not materialised. They did similar in 2016/17/18 - with all the bollocks about "they did not know what they voted for" - "FTZ from Dublin to Cairo" - "immigration will totally stop' - "immigration could have always been controlled" etc. so many attempts to establish in their own minds that Leavers were wrong/stupid etc. and they were right.

I seems that they do not have the straight-forward capability to admit - fair enough, there is no doubting that result - let's respect it and all get on with making, or at least hoping, it works

FWIW - for me, the main benefits of Leaving the EU will be apparent only in the years to come and do not reflect sunlit uplands but rather the avoidance of the worst of the impact that the inevitable deterioration of the EU model will cause.

Hopefully we can build our own model and be ahead of the game when/as that happens

I think it's you that needs to move on.
No-one gives a fuck about your tediously smug gloating posts where all you go on about is Remainers.

I don't think it's a case of don't give a flying fuck, more that 64m people don't recognise the imperative to adopt policies they didn't vote for, simply to keep a proportion of 1.8m people in NI happy.
You put your finger spot on it

Its called reality and pragmatism

Also, is it not time that the English within this Union started to hear about their aspirations receiving some priority?

Afterall we have heard about the 'special case' that is Scotland for decades and to a lesser degree N.I.

Just why must it be a given that Irish and Scottish nationalism should be seen as noble causes to be admired - yet any simple expression of the English caring about themselves (nothing to an extent resembling nationalism) is something to be derided and ashamed of?

I dunno. I mean I only have a sample size of 1, i.e. me. But I do care a bit about the plight of NI. It's unfortunate it will be inevitably be treated slightly differently to the rest of the UK, but Brexit is an unsquarable circle and something has to give. I don't think it's right to avoid it simply to keep NI residents - and only a proportion of them at that - happy.
Again spot on and I am sure the way the vast majority of the UK citizens feel.

Decades go by and events happen that cause the need to manage and accept changes - N.I. cannot be forever immune from that simple fact

Strong decision - quickly put an end to any scope/hope for continued Westminster machinations and start to focus everybody - especially the EU - on getting a deal substantially shaped

Good negotiation tactic as well

Really ? ........ the Eu will run the clock down negotiating ... until at the 11th hour the UK will accept anything thats on the table whether it's a good deal for us or not. There goes your precious fisheries (not that you ever lost them in the first plaice- see what I did there).
