13% of the U.K. fishing quota is in foreign ownership, which doesn’t sound too bad. However, the English fishing quotas have been hived off at the rate of about 55%, the a Welsh is almost 100%, with the Scots at twice the catch of England having only 5% foreign owned. The idea that we can take these quotas back is fanciful and the fact the English fishermen have sold them, with no government intervention, is why the position is as it is. The French and the Scots actively discourage ’quota hopping’ whereas our being in thrall to the free market doesn’t. The government want more fish allocated to the U.K. in the quota but it’ll just mean that the current owners will buy more. They want more fish landed in Blighty but, as we export most of it, we will have to pay extra for landing fees, shipping costs and truck pollution. Its almost like they’ve no idea what they’re doing......
