Even the EU said we could have a Canada style deal at the time - their idea in fact.

The word ‘style’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

The UK isn’t Canada. Canada doesn’t have thousands of trucks a day crossing between itself and the EU. Canada is thousands of miles away. Canada still has tariffs. For Canada the deal that matters is the one they have on their doorstep with its own very large neighbour.

Sign a deal with the EU/don’t sign a deal with the EU, either way it means big changes in the way we trade with our near neighbours and we will be back next year trying to secure better access to our biggest trading market.

The only real calculation to be made now is how much political damage the UK is prepared to accept in its relations with the EU countries and the US when it decides what route to take after 1st Jan.

Sorry mate, but anyone who voted Leave without any idea of what sort of alternative trade arrangements we'd have (like shite Farage "we could be like Norway") voted for shite. No one, but no one, said we'd be leaving with no trade deals at all, with the EU or with all the countries we had EU deals with. If someone had said we'd be grateful for being able to sell Stilton to Japan, it wouldn't even have been labelled Project Fear, but Project Shite.

Just admit it, because you've sat on more fences than the fabulous Fence Sitter Beast of Fencesitterland.

You okay fella?

I've no issue in anyone saying they can't trust him mate but a post saying it begins and then using a woman with her politics to claim brexit is to blame for her wanting a United Ireland is frankly ridiculous.
It’s not going to happen soon anyway as she will not be in power, but tbh blueinsa I think you protest too much.
Don’t know where The Guardian comes in terms of British newspapers. It is headline kind of stuff with little surprising content, but the truth is we wouldn’t be seeing any push towards this now, if it wasn’t for Brexit.
Brexit has put this higher on the agenda well ahead of it’s time.

It’s too early and Ireland is more concerned about Covid for the moment.... as well as Brexit of course, but I can’t see the current government which doesn’t have Sinn Fein in power pressing this issue and I don’t see them conceding government either.

We’re three years off another election. Sinn Fein may well build on their excellent result from the last time, but neither Fine Gael nor Fianna Fáil have any love for them and wouldn’t enter coalition with them.

Very much a viable option for Eire as shipping by boat would remove two customs examinations , the paperwork and the anticipated delays at the ports. They would also not need to bother with the Green card Motor Insurance requirements for their vehicles or the purchase of Health Insurance / Overseas Employers liability cover for their drivers

I doubt that no deal is a serious proposition. The issue for the next 5 days is for No10 to convince the head bangers to support a shit deal. The question is how many get on board? And what if they have enough to rebel? The prospect of BJ seeking labour votes etc.

The only way I see this going is with BJ doing a deal. Its all question now of brexit headbangers having to abandon the no deal fantasy and accept the deal offered.

The first sign of any no deal headbangers accepting a deal will be remain headbangers accusing them of folding. I wish both sets of headbangers well as we seek a sensible compromise.

We could easily end up with No Deal by default due to stalemate in Parliament or by all of the EU27 not ratifying a deal. In other words it could be an unwanted consequence of our government's brinkmanship. The most likely outcome is a shit deal but I wouldn't write off the possibility that we end up without one.

We are way past the opportunity for a sensible compromise. It will either be shit or very shit. I'll go for shit.
For the EU it will be either a relatively minor inconvenience or a slightly bigger inconvenience.

The danger for tories and what BJ will be telling his whips is that if they repeat the mess of the T May era it will all be on them. The ERG types will kick up a stink but the same applies if they try for no deal - either way there will be vocal opposition and open rebellion but what is worse. Either way it will get ugly. But doing a deal is less ugly, far less ugly.

The headbangers are unlikely to support a deal, Johnson’s only realistic hope is getting something substantial on fish. Brexiteers love fish so much it’s almost a fetish.

The rationale seems to be; dump Cummings et al now so they can’t quit over a any deal that is struck, get something on fish, declare victory, wave the Union Jack, and get it through Parliament before anyone reads the fine print.

It does mean no progress this week as it’s too soon after Cummings exit.

Also as us Brits love nothing more than rules and red tape, the fishing industry has written to the Govt asking them not to apply UK red tape and rules as it will prevent them from effectively exporting anything they catch, which is kind of ironic.

I think you will find that if their negotiators (Barnier?) agrees to the deal the EU27 will agree to it. It’s going to be an interesting week to see what kind of deal Johnson will agree to; make no mistake he will agree to one, hence the Cummings and goings at No 10.

You'd be hard pressed to make this shit up.

Have the fishing industry been in a coma ? What the fuck did they expect ?
