The sad truth is (for an island nation) that we don't eat much fish that isn't frozen or in breadcrumbs / batter. It might well be worth us selling / licencing the fishing rights when we get them back? The point being that it will be our decision to do so and not a Brussels decree.

Like this you mean? We can't sell them what they already own.

This article seems to in some parts wilfully confuse the parts of fishing rights that have been sold to foreign companies with the issue of access to waters and governance of quotas being controlled by the EU. The industrial sale of fishing rights stands as I see it, the EU jurisdiction doesn't. I personally think we should impose our own quotas within those foreign owned rights - nothing to do with brexit / taking control really , more a case of preserving the marine environment. These supertrawlers are actually just giant hoovers and death machines with a processing plant on board. That bothers me more than a few Gallic fishing boats catching sardines off Cornwall tbh.

Always makes me laugh to see the wailing when the EU play hardball and contrast it with the delight from the same people when we try and do the same.

I don't see any wailing here Withington Blue.

It is pretty clear that EU are playing hardball as they don't want to allow a country to be a success outside the EU.

why should they have any interest in the fortunes of a country that isn't an EU member? There are plenty in politics and on here just hoping for a collapse of the EU now we are out. Seems pretty equivalent to me.

I suppose if we've genuinely come to a point where those few sticking points can't be resolved then we either have to agree the stuff we can agree on and leave those, or just abandon the whole thing and go WTO. It does sound like both sets of negotiators have tried their best to get a deal tbf.

The negotiators did their job to the limit of their respective mandates, which is exactly what they are expected to do. They did that months ago. Either one or both sides amend their mandates to reflect the other sides position, otherwise it’s ’no deal’.

The only ones that can amend the EU mandate is the E27 leaders. For the UK it’s Johnson.

Barnier and Frost might as well play Candy Crush, or surf porn.

For the record, I couldn’t give a fuck about fish. You could junk the entire industry for all I care. Give every fisherman a 150k and a free house and tell them all to stay at home, it would be cheaper.

What makes you think calling me Withington Blue would bother me? I lived in Withington for years before I moved to West Didsbury. Absolutely nothing wrong with the place.

And no, they’re playing hardball because they’ve had enough of the bullshit and have the upper hand unfortunately.

“Bandits at two o’clock! Dive, dive, dive!” - No, wait that’s submarines. No matter, sunlit uplands over the white cliffs of Dover. Well, okay queues of lorries at Dover with portable potties lining the roadside. Close enough.

Military planes to fly vaccines in to Britain to avoid ports hit by Brexit

Couldn't agree more.

why? there aren't going to be queues. we all know that was part of project fear

It's a contingency - like the Thames barrier, the Nightingale hospitals, Op Yellowhammer (remember that!), having a spare wheel in your boot etc. The plan is to transport as normal or use the express freight agreement put in place for medicines with the EU in 2019.

Surely all we need is a viable walk away option and the political will to use it and the EU will fold like a cheap suit and give us everything we want. I’m sure I read that somewhere.

mcfc1632 has already accepted that as reasonable. I'm sure he could get a message to Saint Frost to say Bluemoon has sorted an acceptable compromise.
Wrong again - do keep up

It is actually preferable, rather than reasonable/acceptable - so long as we get concessions in other areas

If you understood the basics of negotiations this would be obvious to you

Macron, Merkel and Bojo.

The rest make the numbers up and are along for the ride with the exception of the Irish on this occasion.

Add Rutte in as well. Dutch are pissed at Johnson, and they are usually on our side. Dublin will have Biden on speaker phone, given he hasn’t much else to do while he is waiting to assume office :)
