So many on here rush to state that the the UK should shoulder the blame for a deal not being done earlier - it is IMO just such disingenuous nonsense and simply reflects either:

Some posters have not realised that this is the normal approach for the EU - they will seek to leverage with pressure up until the last minutes - if we had wanted to close the deal earlier then that would have required the UK to give wholly inappropriate concessions. I won't upset the sensitivities of some by posting my mantra - but it has been proven to be absolutely true - and here were are therefore at the 11th hour

Some posters simply have a neeeed to slag of the UK in these negotiations because they have not either not moved on and accepted that the UK is securing a clear separation from the controls of the EU - and not just the 'leaving in name only' that occurred earlier this year

The opposite could be true - and I say this as someone that has no interest or intention of voting for them next time

The Tory party's worse outcome - from my POV - would be to see a BRINO outcome and/or continuing negotiations.

If this comes to an end now - either way - then they have 4 years to invest where they will to persuade the electorate that they are 'levelling up' etc and then they can point to a series of significant things that they have changed and how some of these would not have been possible without being free of EU state aid regulations.........

4 years is a long time - and the government can borrow a lot - what they cannot afford is more months lost just chatting shit and getting nowhere. Conversely - that is what the EU would love - they have wanted an extension throughout 2020 - and then they could just relax back to the same old positions. No - for the UK's benefit - the EU have needed to be in a position where the negotiations are going to end and no-deal could be an outcome

You really have not need to keep reaffirming your lack of understanding of negotiations

And there you go again - twisting the words of others

I have never said that the UK 'has the upper hand' or could ever establish having the upper hand

What I have said - and I only post it again because you seem to have forgotten and are misquoting me is:

"We will not see movement from the EU unless and until they are faced with the prospect of a viable walk-away option – and the political will to use it”

And this has of course been proven to be true throughout 2020 - as soon as there was realisation that there would not be an extension

So far, yes, although all the in depth detail is not available as talks are continuing. It's looking like we'll be out of the single market, customs union and European court of Justice, which is as out as it gets.

As someone that always said I was “heart leave, head remain” and ended up voting remain, how/what is better than expected? To me it seems like we get none of the upsides and virtually all of the downsides.
