Always wondered why they weren’t always so unattainable to be fair. You see some of the release clauses at Real and Barca and they’ve always been high, too high for certain players, but doable. Like Neymar.

Bang it to £1b and allows them to accept a lower fee below that if they want to. Agree with you, shows they’ve learned their lesson. I think Pedri was given a £1b clause this week too.

Actually they don't have to at all. They can agree to one in the contract or a the player can go to a Spanish court which will decide a fair value if someone ever attempts to buy him. Clubs choose to insert a buyout because they don't want to risk what the court would value a player at.

You are right but in practice it makes zero sense for them to allow the courts to determine a "fair value".
