We have over 50 members in the North East England branch seems odd them capping membership numbers

Some branches do because of the admin involved when it comes to getting money for the away tickets and the travel costs I believe. If you have a limited number your Chairman/Treasurer has more chance of knowing the member 'personally' to elicit said payments?

That’s the rights of a volunteer I suppose. You choose what work / volunteering you are prepared to do for free.

We (Harrogate) also tend to send in our membership list before the OSC deadline to push the potential time wasters along to make a judgement on whether they wish to join and pay their subs. We didn’t collect subs during the lockdowns though.

We don’t have a cap but, like you say, there could be legitimate reasons for having a limit on members. Especially if only one or 2 people do the work of the Branch.

I wanted to ask on here before i go back to the club. Maybe I have already been 'vetted'.

I got a similar thing and then an email asking if I was joining just to get tickets (which I wasn’t as I can source tickets for every game anyway). Made me suspicious it was a front. 100 members only 5 of which were real allowing them to get tickets for every game…

I’m branch Secretary of North East England we cover from Alnwick to Hexham Newcastle Sunderland and Durham it’s never been a problem with money make everyone happy with ticket allocations is the biggest problem although we done have a process in place which eases things and all members sign up to, we refuse categorically to be a vehicle for tickets only

It’s not one size fits all. I’ve got about 130 resigns or new members and there will be subs outstanding for about 20 people. That’s life and most people pay up eventually:
