It's all about supply and demand with the second hand books. There must have been a lot of copies produced and those selling the second hand copies at 1p will be making slightly on the postage. £2.75 postage cost means that the total cost is £2.76 with actual postage costing about £1 for a paperback of that size. Amazon then take their share of the fees, leaving the book seller with a profit of between 50p and £1 (depending on how cheaply they can post the book).

Amazon themselves don't sell second hand copies but they do discount new copies. They do this because they advertise the new books at heavily discounted rates when they don't have any stock whatsoever. They then use the fact they've got orders to drive the publishers and distributors to strike deals (usually taking 60% of the cover price, which often is more than small publishers can afford).

Hodkinson's book is a great read and well worth paying over the odds for, never mind 1p. It's the sort of book that should be in every Blue's collection.

Meant to add... Hodkinson's book is based on a series of articles/interviews he wrote in The Times. At the time the newspaper wanted to see how the 'giant' MCFC would cope in the 3rd tier and I think they hoped we'd fail, but Mark used his articles to paint a warm picture of City and the fans, and I think that helped transform national perceptions. Whereas many people like to see big clubs fail when they go down to lower levels, Mark's articles gave readers a genuine interest in seeing our fightback.

Correct Gary.

The season before he had done the same to Barnsley for their one season back in the premier league.

This was the opposite perspective and, you're right, it raised our profile.

If you want facts, detail and history of our club this man (Gary James) is the only man to read.

It's an outstanding book, my favourite ever about City.

The last section, with the playoff win and the fan's comments, is truly emotional. It might give you an insight as to why that season, and in particular the way it ended, is seen as a watershed in the club's history.

I agree about the fan comments; the one that sticks in my mind was from a guy who argued that emotional intensity of it all made football seem a little less important to him. Obviously he was more articulate than that, but my copy is up in the loft!

If you were 5 during that season and cannot remember it, get it read. You will realise that the season we are having a the moment is unbelievable and the moaning hordes on here, really are clueless.

It was a poor 6 months followed by an amazing last quarter of the season.

It's a top book. Mark is a Dale fan but seemed to identify and empathise with us. Not a PR flannel job either, he was quietly damning of Chris Bird and Tueart. Ps, I get a namecheck in the book over a vaguely amusing incident abroad. So it's my all time fave, with respects to the legend Gary James
