I've told Mark Hodkinson about the praise for his work and he's delighted. For anyone wanting to find out more about his work, including the details of his latest book "The Last Mad Surge of Youth" then check out http://www.markhodkinson.com/pages/news ... ttings.htm

It's about a washed up rock star and a provincial journalist who reflect on their lives, but it's probably best if you take a look yourselves at the reviews and the book.

From my own writing... "The Big Book Of City" seems to be in high demand as two thirds of all the stock has now been sold by the publishers, so it is likely they will run out in the new year. My next book will be "Joe Mercer: Football With A Smile" - an update to the original and to be published in April. Details will appear on www.manchesterfootball.org next week.

Gary, at one point you were intending to do a book on Frank Swift. Is that still in the pipeline?

Your book is on my Christmas list, Gary, and my wife has ordered it, I believe.

I'll let you know what I think in the new year.

Yes, but...

I've been writing it now off and on for about ten years. I started it shortly after finishing the first version of "Manchester The Greatest City." I've written about three quarters of it.

However, I'm not happy with it at present. I like to make sure I tell the right story and get the character just right. When I did the Joe Mercer book it all slotted together nicely and I loved writing that, but the Frank Swift book doesn't quite flow in the same way at present. I keep picking it up and thinking that it's not too far off, but until I'm 100% happy with it (or any book for that matter) I won't publish it.

I've had difficulties with publishers as well, though James Ward will now publish it. Each publisher thinks it's a major gamble because let's face it it's over 60 years since he stopped playing and over 50 since he passed away (ironically, one publisher tried me to bring it out for Feb 2008 to 'cash in' on the 50th anniversary of Munich - I refused, it would have shown appalling taste!). I don't think that's an issue, but in the current climate bookshops may not be so willing to stock it. It could be that the only way to buy it is direct from the publishers.

Actually, the same is true with "Joe Mercer: Football With A Smile" - a new version will be out in April, but the only way to guarantee getting a copy will be via my publishers (later this week they'll be announcing a discounted subscriber offer on http://www.manchesterfootball.org). At present even places like WHSmith in the Arndale Centre have refused to stock "The Big Book Of City" as they don't think City fans will buy enough from them to justify the shelf space. So the chance of them selling a book on Swift is even more unlikely.

I know the Swift book will come out at some point, but whether that's next year or in ten years I cannot say at present. I hope it's soon, because he does appeal to me and there's a lot to tell.
