Archbishop of Canterbury steps down

I think that is the reason he didn't want to resign but the point at which he found out that Smyth had not been investigated and cleared by the police remains unclear. The resignation would indicate he 'had left undone those things that he ought to have done' perhaps. Even though a former banker I believe Welby is a good and honourable man, very sad that he is paying this heavy price.
It's not 'sad' at all.
He's top dog in the organisation and knew about it all.

Really? So how did you feel about Magna Carta?

Seriously though, I get what you are saying, especially as I am now in my 7th decade.

Someone who writes very engagingly about old age is the former Bishop of Edinburgh Richard Holloway.

He would have made an excellent Archbishop of Canterbury. While still in post he wrote a book called Godless Morality: Keeping Religion Out Of Ethics. That went down well.

Although not gay himself, he performed his first same-sex blessing over fifty years ago and eventually left the Anglican Church out of frustration with its position on same-sex marriage, and before that female ordination. These days he's agnostic.

He's now in his 10th decade but has just published another book.

But the one I would recommend is Waiting For The Last Bus: Reflections on Life and Death.
lol, it feels like I've been around that long sometimes ;-) Agnostic seems to me to lose the advantages of its alternatives tbh but very fashionable in western academe currently. Just listened to The Antikythera Mechanism on the BBC4 In Our Time series - astronomical computers in second century BC - astonishing we haven't cracked our place in the cosmos by now!

Why did Welby not follow through this very serious matter when he had the chance (2013) and monitored police action? He had attended previous summer camps with Smyth in his youth. Why did he concentrate on such matters as Wonga, refugee situation, reparations for past slavery etc) well outside his remit?
One answer would be that this was just one of several historic abuse cases his office was dealing with (as the church invited people to report historic cases).

But how would you regard it if someone who attended the same camp as Smyth (not necessarily at the same time) was "monitoring" police investigations rather than just trusting the police to do their job?

Unless I've missed something, the criticism of Welby and others now is not for a failure to report abuse but for a "lack of curiosity" about lack of police action. (Distinct from the 30 years earlier conspiracy of silence among those who knew.)

Steps down but he should have stepped up and called out that **** abusing all those people for so long and at least got them some semblance of justice … He’s a cowardly **** as far as I’m concerned ..!!

Like I said earlier he's most probably a nonce himself therfore not wanting to lift the lid on what these holier than though weird cunts get upto. Any normal person is truly sickened when children get sexually abused, but these aren't normal people.

There’s a few people in the report I’d consider that for, not Welby though.
