Did I mention I'd been on Eggheads?
Why is it pronounced Bes-ick, whilst the other is Ard-wick?

I remember the first time I had to deliver something to the Kwik Save at Fort Beswick (fuck me that was a scary place....) and got a little lost and asked a few people were Bes-wick was and got a fair few funny looks!

My job was to repair / collect the cash or swap round these.

We had the contract for all of the Kwik Saves in the country. Beswick was the one place I'd shit myself as you couldn't park right outside the store but had to park outside the shops on Grey Mere Lane and walk round with a bag containing £100 or so in 10p's......
Lower Broughton Road wasn't a pleasant trip either....... this was from 1984 - 87

Because when a W comes after a S it is usually silent, but after a D it isn't.

Why did everyone when I was young used to say Rush- em but now everyone says Rush-home?

My god that brings back some unhappy memories. That Kwik-Save was the only "supermarket" within walking distance of our house (loosely speaking, must have been well over a mile) and every Saturday I used to be used as a kind of ad-hoc pack mule to carry 4 bags of shopping per hand from the "Kwikkie" back to Ardwick, past the Red Rec, over the train tracks and back to our gaff near Bank Meadow.
Those cheap plastic bags used to be like cheese wire in my palms. The only upside was a hot Vimto at Grey Mare Lane market's "cafe" before the walk home.

They demolished Fort Beswick in the late 80's if I remember rightly, what a fucking carbuncle that place was.

Think Odsall is just more of a local thing than anything to do with the English language.

It's like they say Pat- re-croft instead of Pat-tri-croft.

And the old timers still say Ume instead of Hulme.

this was to do with the local eateries. When they first appeared everyone would Rush-em, now after many years of serving shite everyone wants to Rush-home.

Hope that's cleared that up. Take note Markt85, fact of the day here.
