are we wasting this window?

tbf I don't think our squad needs a lot of strengthening to compete with the top 4. Yes, we could do with a couple of players competing for LB & RB but on the whole this is the best city squad I can remember. I expect to see maybe 1 or 2 more come in this January but the problem is getting the right quality in the January transfer window. There's not much point paying inflated January window prices unless we are getting real class in and a lot of these sorts of players won't move in the January window.

We're a bit unlucky with injuries atm but if we get 90% of the squad fit we have a class squad, not just a 1st team. We've got a squad of 27 atm and I expect Benjani, Jo, Sylvinho, Petrov to go - Garrido & Etuhu also (possibly), all to leave in the summer with the 5 replacements coming in to be direct competition for what we have left.

We only have 3 CBs really, Toure, Ned & Lescott with Richards & Vinnie able to fill in there so a class CB would be good to see.

nothing against mancini, just wondering what the true script is, i agree with the left back, wayne is out for a while, we need top top cover everywhere though, not just left back.
perhaps i'm panicking.

mancini said on monday semi first then transfers, so he has only had two days since the postponement and already we have one in. middle of next week we will see some action.

No need to panic although I agree that I think we all expected at least a couple of faces in as soon as the window opened.

I suppose that with the tag of "richest club in the world" we expect a new manager to have had funds released to him, it is entirely feasible though that we will wait until the end of the window in order to see which clubs become desperate due to financial problems and attempt to take advantage of those situations.

Of course there is also the theory that if Bobby Manc is merely babysitting the job until summer then we don't want to make any big acquisitions that the new manager might not want.

notoriously hard to bring in anyone of real quality in the Jan transfer window (unless its a short term option like Vierra or Larsson like utd did...generally older players on a free and on short contracts)

Even Sven with all his contacts in world football struggled to any decent business in the Jan transfer window

I wouldnt expect anyone of any marquee signings at all until next summer (and only then if we are in a position to offer euro football)

I agree that we're not 'going for it' but the players that are available and would be willing to come to us are not necessarily the players we want. Patrick Vieira will hopefully prove to be a great signing but he's come to us because he can't get in the team at Inter and feels that if he gets first team football at a competetive level he stands a chance of playing a part in Frances World Cup bid in the summer. Plus we're paying him a fortune to plug a gap and just like Bellamy and Santa Cruz he knows the manager.

If we do make the top 4 just think of the bargaining power that gives us this summer when more top players will be on the market.

I think since the takeover and during MH's tenure there's been a tendency to place all hopes of success on new signings.
I think before the summer it was absolutely true that to break into the top four we needed to overhaul the squad and bring in real quality. For all his faults, MH's did that. Our squad is far from perfect and has its faults, notably at the back, but we do now have a squad capable of success.

Mancini has reminded us that the most important thing is to get players playing as an organised unit. Thats what wins games and keeps clean sheets.

I dont want to critisize MH's or dwell on his reign too much but all to often we looked like 11 fired up individuals, each trying to win the game, instead of a team effort.

Man City is not a fantasy football team or Football Manager where if you collect a group of star players you will succeed. Neither is it the harlem globe trotters of football.

Of course new signings can improve us, but I think its more important to get the most out of what we have.

i'm worried about our targets/ non signings, we have a fantastic chance to finish in the top 4 yet i feel we are'nt really "going for it".
of course its early days but i just feel uneasy, we know our weaknesses, we can buy the best in every department yet it seems all so quiet, if not quiet our targets are scary.

i dont know about anyone else but i was really looking forward to this window, it just seems to be passing us by, we can't let this chance go, it would be just criminal.

thoughts?

I feel there is a very good reason why we are not "going mad" this January.
