How can you be proud of something that was a fluke somewhere between geography and genetics?

I really don't understand and I don't think I ever will.

are you not proud of where your from when you're stood cheering on a city away win in london?

Yes I am, because I chose to support City.

Does it matter? Nationality is nothing more than a geographical lottery.

Exactly right, but being born British means you've won it.

I'm not much of a nationalist, but our country is a pretty great place to live.
It is, indeed! We could do much much worse elsewhere!

Then you fail to appreciate the very essence of what it is to be human. It is instinctive for most humans to feel this way. When you think about it, it is certainly absurd and not a little arrogant but to fail to understand it, suggests you don't know what makes people tick.

I don't know what makes people tick I totally admit that. But admitting ones failings is the first step towards gaining wisdom.

Luckily for you, and having a British passport makes it easier, you can go and live in the country of your choice then take out nationality, your choice.

Chau.

I am British.

Claiming being English is as relevant to anything as claiming to be a Salfordian.

The same could be said of claiming Britishness while being European.

Depends on who you are really.

I always say I'm English if asked.

But you're not.

You are British in any legal form that means anything other than a knuckle dragging EDF point making way.

Well I've never been asked in the legal sense but in general conversation I would answer that I'm English, because I am, always will be.

So how would you respond if asked while abroad? I can't imagine anyone answering "I'm from Great Britain", just doesn't happen imo.

The Op question was "Are you British or English?" Me, well I'm English. You're British, fine.

I've got plenty of them too, fellah :-)

It's Ciao by the way.

Okay I'll admit I'm somewhat fortunate to be British; but proud? No. That's a massive bridge too far.

I reckon your opinion would change if you ever moved away from Manchester.
