rules are so subjective these days i get confused

If the referee deems the offender to have made a genuine attempt to play the ball, and the offence is in the penalty area, then it's a yellow card as the attacking team still have a goalscoring opportunity (the penalty). If it happens outside the area, and the defender is deemed to be the last man (no covering team mates), then it could end up as a red card.
