Armed Forces

Ok my two pennies worth, with your degree you will be encouraged to become an officer no matter what force you join, you need to think about what you want to gain from it, if you go the officer route and want a trade as such then it would be best to look at the RAF maybe air traffic control, pilot etc however as they have just made a load redundant I don't think they will be recruiting anytime soon. I don't know much about the Navy but would think their officer route and trades are similar, now when it comes to the Army you will be in the desert within the year if you go anytype of infantry, of course they have support jobs as well but it depends on what you want from the career. If you are looking long term and want to remain relatively safe I'd go RAF or Navy, if you want adventure for a few years then Army/marines or paras, just remember you will be out in Afghan every couple of years and in a lot of danger. One thing I would say above all if you find a trade that you really want to do but they say they haven't got any slots and try to push you into another trade and then say you can switch once you're in don't sign, believe me it's harder to change once you are in than it is if you stay outside. I loved my 12 years in the RAF and have made some friends for life, it's unlike anything in civvy street, if I had kids I'd encourage them to join I think everyone should it teaches you to be an respect and gives you a great grounding for life.

Most careers offices are now tri-service (AFCO'S) visit one of those, you will not be clubbed over the head and forced to sign on the dotted line but will be given sound advice as to what is available. There as you said quite a few EX/Currently serving posters who will also give you advice. I am just coming up to my 22 year point in the RN and have loved every minute of it and would do my time again if i had the chance. Feel free to PM me if you need to know any more. You will notice some posts from Nashark, take no notice of him/her he aint never served so will not have a clue what they are on about

I was in the RN for 22 years and I loved it.You have the highs and the lows I spent many a time in the carribean doing the thing thats on tele at the moment drug patrols, you get to see some great places and also some bad, with a degree you would prob be pushed towards officer so I would go for a trade. If you have any ???? feel free to PM me.

Good luck in what ever you do.

Hello,

I know there is several current and ex-forces on here, so cheers in advance for reading and any advice you can offer.

I've been pondering for a while now what to do post uni (finishing in around 4 months), and i've started thinking I could join the the armed forces.

I'm a pretty fit lad (sunday league, gym etc), and quite outgoing (although don't fancy heights much).

Does anybody have any suggestions on which force would I should look at (Navy, Army, RAF)?

Anybody else do a degree then join the forces?

Just any other real info would be great.

Thanks once again blues.

SLP

Please don't join.

I think there was a study that shown you were more likely to be killed if you joining the armed forces than if you didn't.

Anyone who is encouraging him to join needs to have a word with themselves.

Yes I have had a word with my self and the answer was, can i have a chat with you in public???. The Armed Forces is a great job. You are a End Bell. Re-arrange as you see fit

Is that supposed to be a threat?

You fucking lowlife scumbag.

I'd think long and hard about what I wanted from the armed forces, I joined the Royal Marines at 18 and served for 6 years, I've been a civvy now for 6 years and really do miss it and have looked into SB reserve and mercenary work as I want that kind of feeling of belonging again BUT I have no chance TBF Royal marine training is arduous and you will most certainly get injured or trash a joint (I'm 30 and my knee is shot to shit) but I did get engineering quals from them even though I'm a paramedic now!! If you do aspire to Special forces I would choose an easier way into the armed forces is army/navy/raf as training isn't as long or as hard but the massive difference once fully trained is that in the Marines i called almost every rank higher than me by their nickname or first name, as they aren't as anal and regimented as other services. All services offer pretty much the same kind of additional training so u can specialise in any area you are interested in, they will try to get you in as an officer bu that's up to you as you can do that at any time through commision. Don't think what you can offer the armed forces but what they can offer you!!

Places visited on this Deployment: Gib, Malta, Cyprus X 2, Egypt, Bahrain x 2 Dubai X3, Doha, Aqaba, Kuwait, Muscat, Basra for one night flew in there for a BBQ, yep BBQ in Iraq!!. There were a few other places but cant remember

Hey thanks for the advice guys.

And you guys arguing, please don't. I didn't ever post this trying to cause trouble between bluemooners.

great vid's mancitymick

I took your advice and went to the tri-forces office (I think its an office) and had a chat with the RAF and Army guys, the Navy guy was on lunch!

Tbf the RAF appealed to me a lot more, the army guy was pretty honest saying its going to be a difficult couple of years, but theres lots of adventure.

However the RAF guy said with my psychology degree it would be good to look at doing intelligence, and in particular becoming an RAF Intelligence officer.

It looks pretty appealing.

Did any body do the officer training at Cranwell?

Join the RAF - postings are usually in the UK , unless you volunteer for overseas. You can still follow City as most trades are Mon - Fri.
I did 17 years and loved it. I got most Wednesday afternoons off to play football for my station. 3 years in Hong Kong wasn't bad either - but getting to City was a long swim!
