My kid brother had his race quad bike nicked from a lock up. He was given a tip of as to were it was. He went to that address and filmed them riding it etc took photos of their faces and their vehicles number plates.

Gave all the evidence to the police. Two weeks later the police got back saying it wasnt enough evidence. What the police meant was it was travelers who had nicked it and we are scared of them.

It isn't just footballers, anyone with a decent car is a target and I would say a weapon to defend yourself is of little use.
Let's be realistic, you are fast asleep when you hear a huge bang, (your front door being caved in) by the time you wake up and are able to react the shits will be in the bedroom or will have had your car keys away.
It is likely there is one of you and four of them, they are pumped up, the adrenaline is flowing and they are shouting and screaming, you on the other hand are half naked and disoriented.
If you live on your own fine, fight back, if you have a partner and children you are putting them in danger.

Friend of mine was broken into during the day. Nothing taken. Police advised her to leave her car keys in prominent spot near the door. They said if the thieves get your car thay will piss off and not bother you. Not entirely convinced.

Yeah. Got burgled last year. Police wouldn't come to investigate or check for prints or anything and asked if I had any cctv, etc. Took that as the green light to fight crime myself. Got a cctv set up, couple of baseball bats dotted round the house. Snooker balls in footy socks in the drawer next to the bed. Can of petrol ready too (I will burn the fuckers feet off). I'm genuinely upset that nobody has been back to try again since.

The baseball bats are 'dotted around the house' are they hidden ? If not what happens when you leap out if bed to find they are armed with your baseball bats ?

Yes they will pay out. If you leave them in the car with the engine running whilst you go inside they won't, but if they are on your hall table they will
