Arsenal (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Hardly any preseason,
new players bedding in,
players coming back from injury,
players out injured,
players injured during the game,
3 games on the bounce with the same starting line up,
Thursday- Sunday turnaround away from home against a side that thumped us last season who have strengthened significantly,
I was expecting another mauling.
The onus is on the home side to be on the attack, not the away side, & with City’s well discussed frailties, Pep has embraced a more pragmatic game plan that aligns with our current strengths.
Maybe we should’ve held on for a win, maybe Haaland should’ve squared it to Foden to make it 2-0?
We didn’t capitulate, Pep has adapted & become flexible with his tactics, something many have been calling out for, & it almost worked perfectly.
Exactly

I said I would rather we attacked even IF we got beat. They might have had a few more half chances but so would we, and I would back up to score more than them. They had nothing special upfront and were limited to as many shots on target as we had, we were handing them fine. To go a goal up with the world's best striker on the park in the form of his life, having scored already within 10 minutes then to try to hang on for 90 is ridiculous for me.

If its about still finding their feet I expect the same XI will play at Huddersfield. I know we're not the finished article yet but we'll never get there playing like that.
If you think that sane 11 plays at Huddersfield you’re delusional mate.

Can't say I noticed that.

People are negative the moment he comes on, need to give him a break, who else would you have replaced Khusanov with ?
I saw him slip once. Also gave the ball away further upfield. But his actual defensive performance was very good - got his head on quite a few balls. I thought he did well

Good point. Good to see the side defend well as a unit.

More positives. Gvardiol, Nico O Reilly, Rodri, Doku, Reijnders all put in a real shift. Haaland, what’s more to be said? Elite.

Shame about Khusanov’s injury, hope it’s not a serious one. Nunes did alright fwiw.

My only concern has been some of the subs and their lack of impact. Nico G, Ake, Savio made us more vulnerable than stable when they came on. Makes sense why Pep wanted to keep the same lineup for 3 games in a row.

imo missed a trick by not subbing off Reijnders for someone. But on we move, he looked knackered.

Big away game out the way, and as expected, the big spenders in Arsenal are still rubbish. They had more rest than us too.

Given the run of games and intensity, I’d have happily taken 7/9 against the opponents we’ve had after two back to back losses.

So why is this team buying players who are technically not good enough for Pep?? I don't get it. I dont believe anyone who says that there aren't better players on the market, ofc there is.
Umm it's not rocket science to realize this..

We are just not the team of 2017-24 anymore!

Who's technically awesome on the ball?

Haaland?? Nope.
Doku?? Nope.
Khusanov?? Nope.
Donnarumma?? Nope.
Dias?? Nope.

Gvardiol?? maybe.
Reijnders?? maybe.

Rodri?? Yes
Foden?? Yes
Nico O'Reilly?? Yes
Bernardo?? Yes

From the subs:
Nunes: Nope.
Ake: Nope
Savinho: Nope LOL
Nico Gonzales: maybe
Stones: Yes

If there's only 4 technically proficient players.. WE CANNOT KEEP THE FUCKING BALL!

Pep realized it and adapted it to fit the players we have.. you may not like it but it is what it is.

That's why we ended up with a draw.. (almost a win) instead of losing 5-1 like last seaso

Now the dust has settled, I reckon we'll probably not win the Premier league. But with a performance like that, I wouldn't put it past us to win the Champions League.
That's the way to do it .

Ask Postecogluo how his leaky, risky high press Tottenham team won the Europa . On the other hand there are many more creative midfields in Europe than the cement wall Arsenal started off with yesterday .

Having Rodri in the thick of it is essential if we have any chance of possession based football ATM but we can't afford to put him into the heart of our game for ninety minutes three times in eight days , which he did again and again and again over the four in a row .

Yep, you're right about Liverpool .... City know it, and Arsenal's desperation and celebration at their equaliser showed that they know it too .... Liverpool have five wins from five games already, and even though it's early season yet, that IS definitely title winning form in anyone's book!

Interesting though that despite Liverpool being eight points ahead of us, they have conceded the same amount of goals as City, and only scored two goals more !
They’re getting over the line in games which is what title-winning sides do when not always playing well. Even in our 100 and 98 point seasons, we didn’t rip up trees with our performances every week and sometimes had to dig a result out from somewhere.

It’ll be hard to reel them in because they’re more of a finished article than us (as are Arsenal) and that’s before most of their signings have properly gelled, but I can see us getting better as the season goes on. It might not be enough this season but we now have a run of games where we have a chance of putting some wins together before we play Liverpool in November. If the gap is still no more than 8 points by the time of that game, it could be an interesting afternoon

If only went hadn't pushed so far up in the 93rd minute.
Apart from that loved the performance, turned the tables and play like 99% of teams play against us.
Gooners had nothing really.
Arsenal are a very good side but they weren’t all that yesterday, Martinelli’s finish aside. For all the talk of parking the bus and low blocks, we still had as many shots on target as they did and of those, I’d argue that ours were the better chances. On another day, Haaland puts his foot through that chance in the second half or squares it to Foden for a tap-in, and Reijnders puts his in the bottom corner rather than at the keeper.

All the defenders that started and Nunez were great.
Nunez deserves a mention as he fitted in brilliantly when he came on second half..
Doku and Haaland great up front.
I thought Bernie was great and Rodri,Rejinders and Phil good games as well.
No failures at all in our first 11 and first sub.
How often can you say that recently.,

We played on Thursday, has to travel away AND are still a bit undercooked. The performance for me was secondary, what I really loved from us was the willingness, the desire, the team spirit they showed. Like Pep said after the game, this is what he wants to see from them right now - the rest will be built upon. All things considered I think it was a great performance, we're seeing something happen here imo. Still early in the season but we could potentially start going on a bit of a run, and we all know what that does to the opposition around us

Having had a few hours to reflect on the goal that was conceded I have come to the following conclusions:

A) a free kick should have been awarded fir the foul on Gonzalez - symptomatic of the refereeing of Attwell

B) Nathan Ake and Josko Gvardiol were uncharacteristically slow to respond to Martinelli's run - forgivable mistakes

C) Josko should have pushed up in line with Nathan but again, forgivable

D) Savinho who had plenty of energy, however, had one job to do, but he didn't do it. He didn't make any effort to close Eze down. Given that he has done the sum of bugger all when called upon this season, and he spent the immediate aftermath moaning to his team mates on the pitch after the Derby thrashing says it all. He has a bad attitude. If he doesn't improve we should get rid. That's not knee jerk that's based on observations last season and this - he does it when he feels like it which won't do. I'm done with him.
D.

There’s no way in a million years we should be allowing Eze 7 years on the ball and the space to look up, see the issue with our line and casually float one into the danger zone.

You do realise that Arsenal didn't create much and we 'handled them fine', because we were sitting deep and keeping compact?

Had we gone toe-to-toe with them from the 1st half, we'd have been fucked after 60 minutes and likely be 2 or 3 -1 down with half an hour to play

Horses for courses, that's all.

Surely you don't think that's 'the' gameplan from now on?

slipped twice, first two involvements, after that he played well, good positioning, a couple of clearances, defensively he's getting better and better
