Arsenal (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

I don’t get the ridiculous lack of respect for Arteta by a handful of bitter old men on these pages. He contributed to some great City seasons, took over a basket case of a squad at Arsenal, cleansed it of all the bad eggs and has consistently delivered Arsenal’s best league finishes since the distant days of peak Wenger. Those who ridicule his 2nd place finishes seem to have trouble joining the dots in terms of context …. he’s been up against the best club side England has ever seen, finishing 2nd to us wasn’t so bad.

Frank, by comparison, got little Brentford punching above their weight and has had a half decent start at Spurs. Another bizarre habit of some bluemooners is to nominate Spurs’ current flavour of the month manager for the really top jobs. Big Ange was the pick to replace Pep by some on here after a decent first few games a couple of years ago. How did that call age.
£920m spent since taking the reigns in 2019. Won 1 FA cup & 2 community shields & 2 of the 3 were won with the “basket case of a squad” he inherited.
BTW I’m not bitter or old nor have I ever suggested replacing Pep with anyone

like for like games, we had an easy start to last season
We still had both Chelsea and Arsenal in our opening games last time and we did what Arsenal did to us in our home fixture. We lost Rodri eariler on which virtually killed any hopes of winning the league.

Cannot get Arsenal to win the major honours and is overly reliant on set pieces and injury time. He was a useful coach/assistant for us and has got Arsenal being more competive but too overly emotional to get over the line.

Your argument ignores a key fact. Last season he was up against a Liverpool team that was probably the weakest winner of the Premier League in over a decade and still finished second. He had an enormous opportunity last year and still couldn't convert.

In addition, they have spent a billion dollars on players and he has less cup wins then Ten Hag of all people.

Well that's the pill you have to swallow if you only qualify for the duffers cup.
I think with both teams playing mid week in the same trophy, against very tough opposition, plus the team we play the weekend after have a 2 more days to recover, and having to travel down to London is about as unfair as it can get. That is a massive advantage for Arsenal to carry into that game. Great tactical move by Pep and how to deploy a team that wouldn't have been 100% physically.
I use to play football at a decent standard and after playing Saturday, it would be at least Wednesday before my mussels would be loosening up. You can't really train with tight joints and mussels.
What about crabs?

While their late equalizer takes a little of the euphoria away, this was a superb display, that most of us did not believe City could do, we went to the venue of what was our worst display last season 5.1 a game we did not make a tackle during the last 3 goals, and ran away from the player with the ball, only Bernardo put in a challenge, a foul during that time.
So ends a run of 5 games, of which we dropped points home and away against 4 of them, which puts us 4 points and about 10 goals better off than last season, we even got a win against the inventor, of the triple decker bus in Europe.

Unfortunately for them, they had more injuries last season. They had to play Merino at CF due to lack of forwards. When they competed against us, especially in 23/24, they hadn't many injuries. Last season Saka missed a lot of games, Havertz and Jesus were badly injured, Gabriel missed games as well.

Basically, both City and Arsenal had lots of injuries and Liverpool had a free run to the title. Maybe this season Liverpool will be less lucky.

I haven’t seen any evidence so far that their luck is running out. Jammy sods.

I think we have the quality, just need time to gel and get a bit more belief in the side but we need to start playing again and stop hoofing it around. We have the world's best striker on the pitch and we're playing for a draw for 90 minutes after going in front?
Thing is we weren’t playing for draw were we ? We were fighting to keep the 3 points and it was perfect until the little mix up.

Bitter old blue and proud me boss.

Fuck anything red but mainly Utd
I’m old blue and bitter too but mainly only where it involves rags and dippers

I’m always slightly grateful to Arsenal for stopping the rags winning title after title in the wenger days. They’re a mild irritant to me whereas the rags and dippers sicken me frequently both on the pitch and off it

i hope you’re right and the dippers are just a flash in the pan. Regardless, finishing 2nd is an achievement, 18 other managers would swap places with him.

I don’t count cups as having any real significance in judging a team or a manager, too many variables

Can you remind me what score it was at Arsenal away and United at home last season.

Arteta is not a winner, he wasn’t in his career and he isn’t as manager.

He hasn’t got the bollocks to manage us.

Community shield lol, I’m pretty sure you could win that with a basket case of a squad.

And even the FA Cup you refer to, was that the one where they beat Hull ?

I don’t think anyone could reasonably argue that Arsenal are not a much stronger team now than when he took over. Sure he’s spent a shitload of money but that in itself doesn’t guarantee anything, he’s moulded them into an excellent side albeit one lacking a little sparkle

I think a lot of the dismissiveness towards him is either consciously or subconsciously down to the fact that on the touchline he comes across as a prissy, little spoilt brat poised at any moment to throw a huge tantrum. I could be wrong but I’ve never heard any of our squad who worked with him badmouth him,so I give him the benefit of the doubt there and assume that in private he’s a fairly decent bloke and as such I can be entertained rather than irritated by his touchline histrionics.

Anyhow I’m bored of defending him now so I’ll bow out of this discussion

I find it a bit odd how some of you seem to not rate your team. Dissecting it - the goal you scored (fabulous play from Haaland initially to win the ball and slip in Reijnders against the best defence in the league) - who else scores that in the PL? Maybe the Dippers.

Then to pretty comfortably hold the back line together and blunt Arsenal's attack for most of the match - who else does that in the PL? At a push Newcastle might - Liverpool would have conceded at least 2.

So overall it was a really good, 'needs must' performance and Arsenal would have won that match against virtually every other team in the PL with that performance. I'm pleased with a point and I don't think the league is close to being done - not with our run in and Liverpool usually shitting the bed once April comes. And it isn't done for you either- we all know what happens to City once March rolls in. Well at least I do, some of your fans would do well to remember what City at the end of the season is like. Even last season your finish was better than any other team.
Just to add a bit of balance, i thought we played very well and am happy with the point against the best team i've seen so far this season.
