Arsenal thread | 2025/26

Commented previously on them spending a large portion of their budget just on replacements for players leaving on a free, them spending 20% over the release clause for zubimendi just pushes that up even higher. Thats now going to cost them well in excess of £100m just to stand still.

Gyokeres and Zubimendi look like top quality signings. With the defence they already have, they will be challenging this season for sure - or they definitely should be! This season they cannot make excuses for not winning the league at the end of May. Just feel like Arteta needs to take the handbrake off and stop the obsession with control and playing the dark arts when they could beat teams without all that.

Madueke is a strange one. They should have gone for Nico Williams, Yildiz or Rodrygo.

Will be interesting to see how Gyokeres goes. It's weird to sign somebody who isn't a Chelsea cast-off. We wanted Isak but checking the stats Gyokeres has a much better international goalscoring record than Isak (he has a much better domestic record too but I'm discounting a load of goals scored in Portugal as that's not the same as scoring against top teams in the PL and CL).

Arteta wanted Sesko but got overruled by Andrea Berta - seems Arteta's influence is being phased out to be solely for 1st team training and preparation with Berta pulling the strings in the transfer market.

Still after Rodrygo - I think the Madueke thing is to provide cover for Saka. Thing is we could have prime Robben and Mahrez as right wing options and Arteta would still flog the hell out of Saka.....

The Madueke Nwaneri rumoured swap would be like the Ashley Cole - Gallas swap.

Darwin Nunez struggled to adapt to the Premier League and I think Gyokeres is a similar type of striker. Their problems is with Arteta in actually winning the league not the personnel.

Whoever starts in the middle of the attack, they are missing a good striker and Gyokeres definetly is one.
Not sure Arteta actually wants a conventional 9. He’s been doing his best to avoid one for years. Don’t be surprised to see Havertz continue to play a lot there

Gyokeres has been top scorer in the Portuguese league, highly rated over here.

But..the portuguese league is shite outside of Sporting, Porto and Benfica so its not defo that he will be able to cut it in a harder league

Arteta was overruled by our new DOF Nicola Berta who the board hired from Atletico Madrid to sharpen up the squad mix. Arteta wanted Sesko who is basically a younger Kai Havertz. Would have meant we played exactly the same way (set piece FC). Berta insisted on Gyokeres who is more of an explosive player and will force us to play differently with a lot more pace and power. Gyokeres is more of an Aguero-type player - although of course I'm not saying he's remotely as good as Aguero - if he turns out to be half the player Aguero was I'd be delighted.
